McKenna Baby Summary: Week 28

28 week old McKenna being held by her dad

This week had some downs. McKenna started acting strange–it reminded me of the four month period where she was upset over basically nothing. I visited the Wonder Weeks website and found that she was in a developmental leap time period, which is what I suspected. By the end of the week, she was back to her old self.

NURSING

Nursing is still going well with no problems.

NIGHTTIME SLEEP

Nighttime sleep was still good with no problems. I still wake her each morning.

SOLIDS

Again, I didn’t start any new foods for McKenna this week.

DREAMFEED

This week, we did the dreamfeed at 10 PM.

FOUR HOUR SCHEDULE

Things are still going well.

ROLLING

One morning, when I went to get McKenna up, she was asleep on her tummy. This was quite exciting for me because I knew that she was definitely at the point where she could roll around and be happy in any position. I don’t worry about getting any rolling disruptions in the future. Next will just be crawling or sitting up 🙂

VOCAL

McKenna was very fond of her voice this week. She practiced all sorts of sounds, and one day Kaitlyn giggled and commented about McKenna’s “singing.”

DOCTOR

We had a doctor visit this week (her 6 month checkup). She is growing well. She is now in the 31 percentile for weight and 30 percentile for height. She was born in the 14th percentile for weight, so she has done well over time. She is also in the normal range for my children (20-50).

FUSSY EVENINGS

As I mentioned above, McKenna had some fussy evenings. It was strange. I knew she was having teething pains (but no teeth yet). She also was just getting over a cold. But both of these things hadn’t disrupted her in the past. So that is what led me to the Wonder Weeks website. By the end of the week, she was over it.

WAKETIME

Her waketime length changed this week, as will be shown in our schedule below.

TIME CHANGE PREP

I started moving her schedule in preparation for the time change. I like to move things slowly. I know some prefer to just tackle it all at once, but I am a slow type of gal. Our schedule is behind by 15 minutes because of this.

OUR SCHEDULE

8:15 AM–wake, nurse, eat 2-3 T prunes and 1 T peaches mixed with 3 T oatmeal
9:20 AM–nap
12:15 AM–wake, nurse, eat about 4 T green veggies and 4 T banana
2:00 PM–nap
4:30 PM–wake, nurse, eat about 4 T yellow/orange veggie, 4 T peaches or pears, and then 1-2 T oatmeal
6:00-6:30 PM–nap
7:45 PM–wake, nurse, change into PJs, story, bed
10:00 PM–dreamfeed

  1. I noticed you don't have much wake time besides feeding in between that last nap and her bedtime. Is it always supposed to be like that? The reason I ask is that my DS who just turned 6 months has about 1.5-2 hours in between his 3rd nap and bedtime; I am wondering if that is causing some of the sleep disruptions so early in the AM (He is waking at 5, 6, and then going back to sleep and waking at 7:15) I am trying to stretch him to 7:30 b/c of the impending time change, but all of the waking in the early AM is throwing him off.

  2. I remember you mentioning that McKenna didn't care too much for mashed avocado. DD didn't either. Around 7 mo she began to prefer chunks of soft food, so we do that whenever it is safe to do so. She now eats small chunks of ripe avocado every other day. She loves chunks of bananas, peas, kiwi, nectarine. You might consider trying again when she gets to that point. Funny, I think my kids eat better than I do. I know avocado is good for me, but I really prefer it in guacamole:)

  3. I am going crazy, please give me some advice. My little Charli is 6 mo and I commented last week that she wasn't napping good and was waking up and hour or two earlier in the morning. You mentioned she may be teething, and she was, but now her teeth are up and I don't believe she is teething again yet. Please tell me, when she wake up in the morning early (she talks for a while), Do I (a). leave her until her wake up time (b). go get her but don't feed her til her wake up time (c). go get her and feed her, then put her right back to sleep, or (d).feed her, then keep her up but lay her down earlier??I am so confused right now! She used to be a good napper/sleeper! I feel like everything I have done with BabyWise has now gone down the drain. I just don't know if I should feed her right when she wakes up to sick with the sleep/eat/wake pattern, or just wait to feed her when she hits the four-hour mark. I have GOT to figure this out because I am super-tired always but can never get a nap in because she is so unpredictable. One hour naps are not long enough. She is on a 3 nap schedule. PLEASE HELP!

  4. Thanks for another great post. I'm right in the throws of a hard transition with my 6.5 month old daughter. She's been sitting up since 5.5 months, but now she's much more steady when she's sitting up and can reach for almost anything. However, she's not rolling yet. She has 4 teeth (the top 2 just came in) and is curious about everything. She's doing great sleeping at night but her days have been horrible. I can hardly get her to sleep passed 45 minutes. Yesterday she slept for 45 mins in the AM and I worked with her for the next 45 mins to get her to resettle and go back to sleep. In the PM she woke every 15 minutes for all of her nap except for the last hour. Most of the time she just wanted to play with her fingers. Any ideas?

  5. Maybe you've addressed this in an earlier post, but how do you ever get out of the house for activities with your older children when McKenna is only awake for just over an hour at a time?

  6. Hi Val! Thank you so much for your great blog… You must really put a lot of hard work into it. I know girls like me really appreciate it :)I have a question for you… My little one is going through the wonderweeks leap at 19 weeks… I feel like I don't even know my own baby! He is usually so laid back, and now all he does is fuss. He is so hard to please! I can't find enough stuff to entertain him with. Needless to say, I'm running out of ideas and getting pretty exhausted.do you have any tips to help get through these weeks? I know you had said McKenna had a rough time with this jump, too, so I was hoping you might have some wise words for me. I hope this comment finds you and yours very happy and healthy. Thank you so much for your time!

  7. Linds, McKenna is my only child it has been this way for. My others had a longer time between bedtime and the last nap. That is fine–and normal. McKenna is just different, but it works for her. It could be causing early wake time for him, though. He might be overly tired when it comes time for bed.

  8. Jenny, I know my kids eat better than I do! I am much more diligent with them than I am myself, which isn't good. I actually don't really like guacamole…it is too spicey for me! I know, I am weak. It is good, but so spicey! I love avacado though. I can just sit and eat a whole one.

  9. Kam, I would go with A so long as she isn't upset. It might have been the 6 month developmental leap (see wonder weeks blog label).

  10. Laura Bailey,It might be a 6 month wonder week (see label "wonder weeks"). It might also be connected to several reasons listed in the post 5-8 month sleep disruptions.

  11. Dani, At times, we have her miss a nap. I never have her miss her first nap since that is most important. She can handle being awake longer in the day if needed. We will go to the park and she will go down late for her second nap. She can also miss her last nap if needed. this is the one I prefer to have her miss if needed, which is what we all prefer because we like to go out as a family. So to make a long story short, she can stay up longer on ocassion and she can miss naps on ocassion.

  12. Trisha,Hopefully you are out of it by now. You just have to be patient. Don't plan on getting much done other than helping baby through it. It will pass and your sweet baby will come back to you 🙂

  13. Does she really take 3 hour naps? My little guy is almost 6 months and he used to take 1 1/2 hour to 2 hour naps and is on a 4 hr. feeding schedule. Over the last few days his naps have dwindled down to 30-50 minutes 🙁 He is also staring to wake up at night again more frequently. I am hoping it is just a phase caused by his learning more (he is almost crawling and sitting), but it has been really hard and I hope it is not going to continue. Any suggestions?

  14. Kenny and Jen, yes, she really did. But she is a sleeper. 1.5 hours can be normal for babies, too. Actually, 1.5 hours is more normal. There is a good chance this is (hopefully was) a phase.See the blog label "wonder weeks" as well as the posts "5-8 month sleep disruptions" and "nap disruptions: crawling, standing, rolling, etc."

  15. Hello! Thank you for sharing your time and experience! My son is in his 28th week. This is what his schedule looks like (he wakes on his own for all but dreamfeed): 8:00-8:30am-Nurse + small solid breakfast (maybe 1T total…I usually offer him 1T fruit and 1T oatmeal) 9:15am-Nap. Sometimes he'll wake during transition, but overall, pretty smooth. 11:30am-Nurse + solid lunch: 1T green veggie, 1T fruit, 2T Oatmeal. He'll usually eat about 3T total. 1:00pm-Nap. Length varies from 1 hour to 2 hours 2:00/3:00pm- Nurse 4:00-Nap. This start-time varies. Sometimes he's sleepy earlier, sometimes he won't sleep at all. This is our "?" nap. 6:00pm-Nurse + Solids: 1T Orange/Yellow veggie, 2T Barley/Rice 6:30pm-Down for the night. 8:00/8:30pm-Dreamfeed.So, as you can see, he's sleeping 12 hours a night, or 14 if you count pre-dreamfeed (I know you don't, but I just wanted to point out how much "night" sleep he's getting). Some questions I have:1. He doesn't get as much nap sleep as is recommended. Is that okay because he's getting so much at night? Should I be trying to train him to take his 3rd nap, or is he just dropping it earlier than he's supposed to?2. He doesn't eat as much solid food as I expected him to be at this point. He'll eat it enthusiastically for a little bit, then get distracted. He's just not that interested. He'd rather play with the strap on his high chair! 🙂 Should I be concerned? He eats well nursing and I assume he's just not that hungry. I don't want to push it and make mealtime a struggle or a game. 3. I've been trying to wean him from his swaddle. I tried at 21 weeks, then again around 25 weeks, and am now trying again. He would just scream for his whole nap time, then be completely inconsolable (he rarely cries for bedtime longer then 5-10 min.). We had several BAD days before I'd give in and swaddle, assuming he just wasn't ready. So, today, I'm starting again. He did REALLY well going down for his first nap (only 30 min. of fuss crying). So, my question is should I count this blessing and just train him 1 nap at a time, like when we were initially CIO? Or, should I do all at once? I don't want to get him overly tired, but I don't want his weaning to last 2 weeks! :-)Thank you so much!

  16. Hi H,1- He is old enough to drop the third nap if he is ready for it2-I wouldn't be concerned unless his weight and growth start to take a real hit.3-Hmmm…that is up to you. I go for all at the same time, but if it works better for you to take it one nap at a time, go ahead. Two weeks isn't that long in the grand scheme of things 🙂

  17. Can "wonder weeks" last for months? 🙁 We hit the wonder week back at the 28 week mark..and we've never come out. 🙁 Not sleeping well at night, naps are a mess, and I, too, feel like all my hard work is gone. (She is 8 months now.) She is crawling, "talking", doing all the leap things suggested in wonder weeks. I am just hopeful to have my sleeping, happy, cheerful baby back sometime. She cries when people touch her and is VERY fussy.

  18. No, a wonder week won't last that long. She could have entered it but is then having further difficulty…like teething, learning new skills, etc. She could also be needing more age-appropriate activities at play time.
