McKenna Baby Summary: Week 43

Schedule and routine for a 42-43 week old baby. Get info on this baby’s daily schedule and routine for each day and know how to structure your day.

43 week old McKenna with her mom

May I first take a moment to lament that my baby will soon turn 10 months old? Double diget months?!?!?! I just love every minute of her baby life. I know, I know. The future will have much fun. Enjoy the moment. Yes, I know. But I am taking my moment to lament. Okay, moving on.

NURSING

Things are still going well and we are nursing 4 times a day.

SOLIDS FINGER/FOODS

Things didn’t really change here this week. I did notice that her little pincer grasp is perfect now. She uses her little index finger and thumb to daintily pick food up.

ECZEMA

She started to get some eczema signs on her forearms this week. I had her in a short sleeved shirt and she is an army crawler, so that might have aggravated the skin and caused a little flare up. I think another contributor is that it is hard for me to lotion that area of her body. She doesn’t like her arms held still while I lotion, so I don’t always do a great job of it.

Well, not anymore! This is one of those things where you have to do what is best for your child even when she doesn’t like it. I put hydrocortizone cream on her forearm morning and night for a couple of days as well as lotion, and her skin is back to great now. She is also protesting the lotioning less, though she is still furrowing her brow at me while I hold her arm still. McKenna is a wiggly child.

DROPPING THE THIRD NAP

We are still in the weaning process and have no significant changes this week.

WAVING

McKenna has a fun new thing where she waves to me every time I go to get her up if she is already awake. Little things like this just make me love this time in a baby’s life.

INDEPENDENT PLAYTIME

She was great wtih independent playtime this week, but I forgot to write a couple of weeks ago that she started protesting it. I just kept at it with a shorter time period. I also started having her listen to children’s hymns while playing. She once again loves it and doesn’t complain at all. For now.

OUR SCHEDULE

8:15 AM–wake, nurse, solids (prunes or peaches/apricots and oatmeal). This is when we do a bath and independent playtime.

10:00 AM–nap

12:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (green veggie and applesauce. Sometimes mix with blueberries or cherries).

2:10 PM–nap

4:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (yellow veggie and bananas or pears).

5:30ish PM–dinner with family. Finger foods and what we are having.

6:45 PM–nap. Some nights, she stays up until 7:00. Since most of this week included this nap, I am including it in our schedule.

7:45ish PM–wake, nurse, PJs, story, bed

On nights we dropped the third nap, we did:

7:15-7:30 PM–nurse, PJs, story, bed.

  1. Hi there — just wondering how many ounces of milk you think you are now giving her? My baby just dropped her bed time bottle, so I am concerned she may not be getting enough (we do 8 ounces in the morning and 4 ounces at lunch at dinner – so 16 total). Thanks!

  2. My baby Cayla is 10mths and a week. Starting last week, I noticed that she didn't need the third nap and so I've weaned her off it. The few days that she had the third nap, it took her forever to get to bed. So, no more evening naps baby!! 🙂

  3. My son is 10 months old today and has a similar schedule to McKenna. I was just wondering how your schedule looks for when you go to church on Sundays. I've been trying to figure this out for the past 7-8 months that we've been taking him to church, but I still don't think I've got a very good plan. I would welcome any suggestions because he doesn't tend to take naps while at church, making for a very tired baby later on. Thanks.

  4. Eucerin lotion the BOMB for eczema. Apply very liberaly. Then there is always bag balm. Eucerin knocked it out of my son in 2 days!!!!Also, check out diet-related things, like sugar in fruits. I noticed most meals are with fruit. Sometimes good fats, like avacoda, olives, olive oils, etc can help .

  5. About church days : these are days when we have learned are "not what we are characterized by." It is very hard for an older baby to take a nap in the busy, bright nursery. My son is 10 monnths and this is our compromise: sometimes he stays with me in service, sometimes he gets to rock out in the nursery, and we almost always just attend worship, and not sunday school. Two reasons: flu season and my baby. Baby falls asleep on the way home for about 20 min. I then move his next nap up and he often extends the nap time enough so that we are often right back on schedule. I also move my 4 yr olds nap up so I can get some rest. (so instead of a 2:45 nap for Baby, he goes down at 2 and isntead of a 2 nap for 4 yr old, she goes down around 1:30. Some days they both go down at 1:30. It all depends on the cat nap on the way home and if he stays asleep bundled int the car, in the garage with the baby monitor on or not. Sundays can make you crazy without flexibility – just get back on track quickly and get ready because Tuesday is often the day they get sick from being in the germy nursery! ha!

  6. Maybe you're planning to do this later, but could you do a post summarizing your experience with eczema and the products you have found helpful? I wanted to share it with a friend of mine, but felt like it was scattered amongst a lot of weekly summaries. That would be awesome!

  7. Daisy, I have no idea 🙂 I know when I wean my kids at one year, I shoot for 24 ounces per day. I think the recommendation for a one year old varies from 16-28 or so ounces. I think for a baby under 10 months, it would be more…but I have no idea 🙂 I would ask her pedi how many ounces she should be getting for her age.

  10. Hi, My question is should I start dropping my daughters early morning feeding now in prep for weaning at 12 months? She is very petite about 15 lbs- she was 13 at her 8 month check up and has always been on the petite side- born at 8.3 but gained very slow yet is very active and walking now and has been crawling since 5 months. I have kept the early 6am feed for her weight issues but in the last month she has been waking between 3-5 and since she wakes in a scream it is easier for me to feed her and put her back to sleep and she will sleep until 8. I just found out I'm pregnant and with that come all the thoughts of sleeping issues with her so I am working with her to get back to sleeping until 6 at least but now I wonder how to go about weaning her off this early feed??? Hope this makes sense – I very much value your opinion and follow your blog to a T since she was born!! Thank you, Sarah

  11. Scat,I would work on dropping it. You don't want her waking and a baby waking in the night. I would just stop feeding her at that time. If she won't be consoled at that time by you without feeding, have your husband go in to her. You could try giving her some water in case she is thirsty but not necessarily hungry. She is small for her age, but big enough ot make it through the night. Good luck!
