NURSING

Nursing nutritionally is going well. We are still nursing four times a day.

The biting, however, is still in full force! I have tried to anticipate the biting to see if I could curb it as directed by my lactation consultant friend. Well, McKenna is a tricksy little hobbit (yes, I do love LOTR–if you don’t know what LOTR is, you don’t love it) and I can’t figure it out.

For the most part, her biting is very gentle and doesn’t hurt. But the anticipation of the biting and the knowledge that it could, and likely will, hurt someday is like watching a horror movie (which I don’t like).

I think she pretty much uses me as a teether of some sort. And her biting is sometimes borderline painful.

I am now gleefully anticipating that one year mark so we can start weaning. I do not like biting, Val I am.

MILK SUPPLY

At the beginning of this week, I got sick with something. I talked about this on my recent post “When Mom Is Sick.” I lost 7 pounds over night and landed in the ER.

It was short lived, but my supply definitely took a hit. Within a couple of days, however, it was back to normal. What an amazing thing the body is!

BLANKET TIME

Another frustration for me this week! I am a slow and steady type of gal. I typically like to start with a few minutes and slowly work my way up. But things were not working well this way. I wanted to give up.

If I wasn’t so incredibly stubborn, I would have. I didn’t know about blanket time when Brayden and Kaitlyn were this age. They have turned out great so far…but it is something I see value in and I want to make it work!

I vaguely remember the length of time being talked about in the past, so I brought it up on message boards. Some moms told me they needed to start with longer intervals. So on the last day of this week, I started with 10 minutes. It went much better than our previous time of 4!

So, we have another week ahead. I will report on the use of 10 minutes next week.

I think by the end, I will have a great post full of tips for blanket time.

TEETHING

McKenna broke two teeth this week, which I am guessing contributed to the biting of the Mommy. She has one more on the brink and another showing pressure under the gums.

The poor girl is getting hammered! I kind of prefer it, though, to one every so often. Let’s just get it over with. She isn’t any more upset with several teeth than she is with one.

Babywise Schedule Week 50

OUR SCHEDULE

8:20 AM–wake, nurse, solids (prunes or peaches/apricots and oatmeal). This is when we do a bath (four days a week) and independent playtime. We then do sibling playtime.
10:20 AM–nap.
12:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (green veggie and applesauce. Sometimes mix with blueberries or cherries). She then “helps” me put Brayden in rest time (which just means telling him to go) and Kaitlyn down for her nap. We then do blanket time followed by free play with me in the same room.
2:30 PM–nap
4:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (yellow veggie and bananas or pears). Then time with Daddy.
5:30ish PM–dinner with family. Finger foods and what we are having. Then time with family.
7:15-7:30 PM–nurse, PJs, story, prayers, bed.

  1. I am recovering from a bite last week. Ouch! It was a random bite and I'm not sure my daughter entirely realized what she was doing. Nonetheless, I have been "nursing" it all week and am finally to the point where I don't grimace in pain while nursing. It made me remember the first weeks of nursing where your nipples are so raw. Oh…the pain. I don't wish for those days back and I hope that you don't have to "re-experience" them either.

  2. Hehe, now you have got to dress up McKenna as a hobbit next year for halloween! I call Tobias my little hobbit all the time because he's short, he has big feet and eats ALL THE TIME. The kid would have invented second-breakfast if Tolkien hadn't already been smart enough to do it for him 🙂 We have second-breakfast almost every day now that I'm pregnant, lol! And biting while nursing is one of the biggest jokes of parenting imo! It is just not cool at all! That tendency definitely influenced my decision to wean Tobias at 9 months, he just liked to bite down every once in a while. Just a note, I noticed that Tobias bit more when my supply was low. I think it was due to frustration over not getting the milk out as quickly or abundantly as he wanted (remember the hobbit-like appetite). So maybe that is contributing to her wanting to bite.

  3. This schedule sounds like my daughter's sched. She is only 5 months old. Is this too young to have this type of schedule? (PS. We have a dreamfeed in there, and no solids yet.)

  4. Hi Val — I noticed in your sched recap for the older kids, you allow them to watch TV for 30 min per day. What's the rationale behind this? We haven't done much TV with our 14 month old but do you feel there's some sort of value in 30 min per day. Would love to see a post on TV.Thanks!ps. thanks for the post on baby language learning

  5. Amanda, Halloween. Brayden has that all planned out…a million times over. Every couple of weeks he has a new plan. Hopefully his plans have more sustainability toward Halloween because it takes me a couple of months to make these things! The biting with McKenna was not a low-supply thing. I did think about that…but she would do it in the middle of let-down and milk would spray. I kind of think it was all about bad timing with the teething. I must make a great teether.

  6. Alyssa,Nope, not too young. They stay with a pretty similar schedule for a long time once they hit 4 hours. One difference that should be in there is a short third nap each day.

  7. Daisy, there is a post on TV. It is under the label "television."My kids don't start watching TV until 18 months or so, and I use the term "watching" loosely. With Brayden, we did it each day while I nursed Kaitlyn. Once Kaitlyn was older, it is a fun thing they do together and they watch things like "Word World" on PBS. But I don't think it is necessary, and in the nice weather, we can go weeks without TV at all.

  8. Hey there. I noticed that your daughter's waketime is only 2 hours? Am I seeing that correct? I have been trying to stretch my son's (he's almoost one) to 3-4 hours, but I don't know that he can do it. What is the norm? Also, were giving her puree at 50 weeks? I am struggling with what to do. Do I give him puree or let him try to feed himself? Thanks!!

  9. For the first two waketimes, about two hours is pretty average for most babies. They should pretty much be up for two, down for two, up for two, down for two, then up until bedtime.I do some purees and some not. I tend to do purees for veggies because they are hard (impossible in most cases) for a one year old to eat raw. So you could could some and cut into safe chunks, or just continue with purees for now. For fruits, there are so many fresh fruits in season that I tend to let her feed herself with those. I do feed her applesauce since a whole apple isn't safe for baby, too. With my first, I fed mostly purees until 14 months and started moving away. With my second, we went straight to self-feeding at 12 months. With my third, I have been in between.Go with what he wants. My second hated pureed food, so she was much happier eating them cut up.
