Help Me Out: Gift Ideas For Kaitlyn

This post may contain affiliate links.
I enjoyed reading your recommendations for gift ideas for a one year old girl. McKenna's gifts are all purchased now and I am looking ahead to Kaitlyn's third birthday, which is only about a month away.

I am considering a barn from Melissa & Doug. Kaitlyn is horse crazy. I also have some books I want to add to her collection--she is obsessed with books. I am also thinking about a little bicycle and possibly the new Fisher Price Fairy Treehouse. Another item I am considering a child digital camera. I think she has enough Calico Critters right now.

I thought I would see if any of you have any great or input on these ideas for a three year old girl. Thanks!

My niece just turned three years old in January. For Christmas, someone got her a kid digital camera (it came from Walmart and was around $40). She loves it and it is so neat. You can put the pics that they take on the computer and print them.
She is a girly girl and LOVES LOVES to dress up in dress up clothes. I am sure Kaitlyn already has all of this, but my niece is really into "pretending to be a Mommy" so she got multiple baby doll nursery items. HTH!

My DD1 turned 3 last month and her play kitchen was a huge hit (but I know you have that). But she loves the play food,etc....
She also got doll stuff and now has outfits for her dolls and cloth diapers, etc. She has the hand coordination now to do it herself!
But you mentioned she is horse crazy so do you have the My Little Pony sets. My friend is giving me her My Little Pony Castle set so I don't have a review yet for my 3 YO. The only thing is it does have small parts so I'll probably put those away until her younger sister is a little older. But she still should get plenty of use out of it.

My daughter turned 3 last August and we gave her the Fisher Price Princess Castle and she loves it! It keeps her occupied to play pretend and she also loves having my husband play the prince and me playing the horse :)

My warning on the camera is it's a battery hog. And it's somewhat slow taking pictures. But it is indestructible.
The fairy tree house looks fun.
I've had really good luck with Melissa and Doug stuff. We've got their castle, and love it!

I adore Melissa & Doug toys. They are such quality toys. Avery loves digital cameras. My mother-in-law got her one for Christmas and she loves it. At the time, Avery was only 22 months old. I am not sure if you have an AC Moore near you but every week they have 40% off, at times 50% off, coupons in their weekly fliers that you can use on any full-price item. I have used these on the Melissa & Doug items.

I agree with previous posters about Dress Up stuff-- I have nannied for several 2-4 year olds, and dress up games were just the best. Super imaginative playtime on their own, with siblings, or with you! It's fun to collect things over time, add to it from your own hand-me-downs, and watch the ways they turn old clothes into so many different outfits. Browse thrift stores for fun hats & purses, make a tutu out of tulle (, and add a few play scarves which end up being capes, hats, dresses, wings, and water/hills for toys to play on (

So fun!

Hi Val,
One idea my parents-in-law had when my DD turned 3 was an electronic music keyboard. I was quite skeptical, being a musician in a previous lifetime, but it is a huge hit with both DD and my 5.5yo DS.

Another idea we've had heaps of mileage out of is a picture peg board like this ( ). Ours has 3 different sizes of pegs, and 5 or 6 different colours, and comes with pattern cards. My DD enjoys abstract art, but my 5.5yo DS likes to copy the patterns.

Thanks everyone for your help! Some things we have, but not others. We have lots of dress-up, but no boas--so that is a great idea.

YS, The Pony sets are a fabulous idea! I didn't even know they made such things.

I also love the fisher price castle idea, but I want to give that to McKenna next Christmas.

Penny, my in-laws have a keyboard like that and the kids love it...I will have to ponder that because it can be really noisy and I am glad it is something we don't see often :) The mosaic board is great, too...we have one of those :)

Thanks everyone!
