McKenna nd Kaitlyn sledding

This is a summary for McKenna as a 3.5 year old plus 3 months….however many months ends up being. I think that is 45 months.

EATING

McKenna is still eating less than I could consider a normal amount for McKenna. I know that when Brayden was a toddler/preschooler and ate very little it stressed me out. It probably did with Kaitlyn, too.

But at this point, I know that I give her enough food and that she is an intelligent enough person that she won’t let herself starve.

We will require a few more bites before she is done if it seems she hasn’t eaten much of anything or if she seemed to skip the vegetable portion of her meal, but other than that we don’t stress about McKenna and her eating.

3.5 YEAR OLD NAPS AND SLEEP

McKenna very much needs a nap each day. If she does not sleep for a nap, she is often quite mischievous by bedtime. She is as happy as can be, but literally seems to be seeking out ways to annoy people.

So we aim for a nap each day. There are definitely days it doesn’t happen, but most days we do what we can to make it happen, which isn’t too hard since we have a baby who sleeps for three naps a day.

Naps tend to be 2 hours long.

At night, she still sleeps about 11.5 hours.

OBEDIENCE

For most of this month, McKenna was quite well-behaved. At the very end of it, and really creeping into the next month, she started to react poorly to the extra freedom that came with siblings being home from Christmas break. She will definitely benefit from normal routine of everyone being back at school and work.

If your preschooler is not listening to you well, consider freedoms.

  1. DD2 sounds a lot like Mckenna's personality and definitely when she is tired she is hyper and likes to irritate/annoy you. She is almost 4.5 so often i have to wake her from nap so it's kind of the start of the weaning process and i can definitely see if i don't watch that she overdoes it in the PM, she gets super mischievious and drives us all bonkers:) She is a button pusher by nature and when tired it's times 10. I am dreading the start of full-day kindergarten in the fall with her for this very reason!:)

  2. Oh yes! McKenna will have preschool next year, then Kindergarten is half day so we have some time. But honestly, my dad is a button pusher and still gets a thrill from doing so, so I don't know if she will ever outgrow it 🙂

  3. Oh am I so glad I'm seeing this! I keep wondering if it's only my child and if I'm doing something wrong. My 10 month old, first off barely self-feeds and I can really only get her to successfully self-feed cheerios, puffs, and graham crackers. I'm not so worried about that. She'll get there eventually. But my fear is how little it seems she eats. And she's always been that way. But with me wanting to wean her close to a year, it was starting to scare me. So glad you write these summary posts! Just gave me some relief 🙂

  4. My 5.5 year old is a button pusher. She completely shocked me when she started kindergarten by being a terrific student, not just academically either. She really is better about keeping herself to herself at school than I ever thought she would be. There is hope!

  5. Angelle that is good to hear! i actually am not worried about her doing well in school as I think she'll do great……..she does great 2 mornings in preschool. I am dreading the full days as she will have just turned 5 (so a young five) and our district went to full days this past year. DD1 is in kinder so she did fulldays but she was 5.5 when started and i think those 6 months made a big difference in her being able to handle it without being OT. She comes home wiped out but after a couple of weeks seemed pretty adjusted. My 2nd is even higher sleep needs (part of her ants in the pants personality i think) and i know she will be exhausted as it's a long and full day with them (recess 2x,gym,etc). So i know she'll be wiped out and i can only imagine how hyper! I think it won't be pretty! Oh well. ON the othe hand i'm hoping she will be so wiped out maybe she wouldn't have the energy to push our buttons 🙂

  6. McKenna is typically good for others too so far as I am told. I know in Primary at church, she doesn't sit still perfectly, but they tell me she always obeys when they tell her to do something.

  7. As McKenna and Jack are probably 1-2ish weeks apart in age, I loved this summary (as I did all her other ones!) because it's so nice to see that a 3.5 hour WT after nap and before bed works for her. When Jack is not at preschool but at home on the weekend, we can usually let him go till 3:30 for nap (as long as it's 2 hours) and still go with a 7/7:15 bedtime. This was so helpful to read! Also helpful to see that she's not a huge eater at meals. Neither is he! Must be this age!
