Reader Teething Questions

Hi! It’s been a while since I have posted a question but I’m always reading/enjoying this blog! My son is almost 21 months now and has always been a great eater. Last week he had a mild ear infection and wasn’t feeling that well and started rejecting his favorite foods. He will load them in his mouth, and end up spitting them out. Now he is feeling better and still doing the same thing. I do think he is also teething, but he has NO problem eating treats, etc. I can hardly get him to eat chicken, ham (deli-he used to LOVE this) and also canned green beans, which he used to eat like they were yummy french fries! I am not sure how to handle this…Thanks for any advice!

Sarah,I have had a similar situation with Kaitlyn over the last few days. Between teething and some mysterious illness (that gave her a fever of 105.9!), she was not eating, but willing to have her potty treat ;)Teething does have an affect on how much they will eat and what. If it is molars (which I assume it is at that age), then try foods that don’t require “gumming”, like applesauce, yogurt, etc. He also might like something like frozen peas, which require gumming but are realy cold.Kaitlyn also isn’t eating foods she normally loves. I found she will eat plain pasta with a little butter on it really well. Avoid treats. If he has little to no appetite, treats might be filling him up. I understand the desire to get calories in him in any form he will take them, but nutrients are important. He is old enough to be told he can have a treat AFTER he eats some real food, and only immediately after, not several hours. Good luck!
