Reader Weaning Questions

Weaning From Bottle:

For some reason I am having a problem posting this question under the appropriate title and this is the only place on the blog where I can get it to work.My question is in regards to weaning from the bottle. I read the article you posted. I was wondering at what age did you wean Brayden from the bottle to a sippy cup. Isabella will be 11 months next week and I am wondering if I should start weaning her right now. Also at what age did you stop giving your little ones milk or formula before bed?

mommytoisabella,Brayden had sippys starting at 6 months with water. I weaned him from BFing at 12 months. He had a bottle until he was 13ish months, then we started to wean and took about a month. It wouldn’t hurt to start weaning now. See the sample schedules post to see when I did milk before bed: Sample Schedules: One Year and Up

  1. I, too, gave my kids sippy cups with water at every meal from when they started solids.I never gave my kids cow's milk in a bottle — we weaned straight to a sippy cup.Our pediatrician told us it was okay to wean to cow's milk starting around 9/10 months (NOT to give cow's milk for every meal, but if I was dropping breastfeeds, I could replace with cow's milk instead of formula). So what I did was replace one milk feeding per month with a sippy cup of cow's milk, starting at 11 months. So at 11 months, we had two breastmilk feeds and one cow's milk feed, at 12 months we had one breastmilk feed and two cow's milk feeds, and then at 13 months we did all cow's milk.

  2. My DD was on a mixture of formula (through bottles) and bfing until 13 months. I weaned her to all formula first as we dropped feedings and used a "learner cup" which helped move from bottle nipples to cup. She can now use many kinds of sippy cups at 15 months.
