Poll Discussion: Announcing Pregnancy

This post may contain affiliate links.

A reader requested we talk about announcing pregnancy for our next poll. That is a fun topic! It is very helpful for me when compiling answers if you at least number the answers you give. You can also copy the questions and answer them. If the question does not apply to you, simply put "N/A."

  1. How many weeks gestation were you when you announced you were pregnant?
  2. Did you tell everyone at once, or did you tell family and close friends first and then weeks later tell the general public?
  3. What was your rational for announcing when you did?
  4. Will you do things differently next time?
  5. Any fun ideas for how to make the big announcement?
  6. Anything else you want to say?

1.) 12/13 weeks
2.) Told family/close friends right away (5 weeks)
3.) If I had a miscarriage in the first trimester I didn't want to have to talk about it with everyone. My rule of thumb was, if I wouldn't feel comfortable sharing news of a miscarriage with someone, I didn't tell them I was pregnant until the 2nd trimester
4.) N/a (probably)
5.)I saw one once that had a picture of the mom holding a "bun in the oven" sign and the dad holding a "baker" sign. That made me laugh. :p
6.) N/a

Two pregnancies
1. How many weeks gestation were you when you announced you were pregnant? 5 weeks for both
2. Did you tell everyone at once, or did you tell family and close friends first and then weeks later tell the general public? I told family only with my first then friends around 10 weeks with a Facebook announcement at 20 weeks. With my second we told family and close friends 5-6 weeks with the exception of my husband's family because dh wanted to announce at a family gathering in person a few weeks later. Around 12 weeks we started telling everyone else with a Facebook announcement at 20 weeks.
3. What was your rational for announcing when you did? The risk of miscarriage kept me from announcing to more people sooner. I realized with my second that I would want more support from my friends if that had been the case. Facebook just seems SO PUBLIC and awkward if issues came up.
4. Will you do things differently next time? Come up with a creative way to announce instead of just calling :)
5. Any fun ideas for how to make the big announcement?
6. Anything else you want to say?

1.How many weeks gestation were you when you announced you were pregnant?
A: I was 6 weeks when I announced to family, and 8 weeks when we announced to everyone else.

2.Did you tell everyone at once, or did you tell family and close friends first and then weeks later tell the general public?
A: See above answer. :)

3.What was your rational for announcing when you did?
A: It was too big of a secret to keep for long!

4.Will you do things differently next time?
A: No, I think we will do pretty much the same thing.

5.Any fun ideas for how to make the big announcement?
A: We took pictures of shoes in a row, with our D.O.B underneath.

Anything else you want to say?
A: I totally get why people wait to announce in regards to the risk of miscarriage (I really stressed about this), but someone once said something that changed my mind. That is, every life should be acknowledged. If you keep the knowledge of your pregnancy to yourself, then miscarry, others don't necessarily get to acknowledge your bubba's life. However, I totally respect everyone else's point of view in this regard. It is a very personal decision.
