Brinley Preschooler Summary: 47 Months Old

This is a summary for Brinley from 46-47 months. She is now just one month shy of four years old.

SLEEPING

Sleeping is the same. Nothing new. She is still napping each day. Some children this age are more at rest time at this age and not napping. Some still nap.

EATING

Eating is also the same. She eats well, but she will eat just a little food if she really wants to move on to something fun.

SICK

Brinley got sick during this time period. She was throwing up. She was such a little trooper. When our kids are throwing up, we give them a big bowl to throw up into. I also spread a blanket on the couch for them to sit on…I figure I can pull the blanket off when they are done and wash that but I can’t wash a couch as easily. I don’t know how much that helps keep the germs isolated in reality but it makes me feel better.

SWIMMING LESSONS

Oh Brinley. She has this tradition where she cries through her lesson. She does what she is told, but through tears. She is very afraid of water that is deep (deep to her). We are working on it.

And really, during this month she continued the tradition, but the next month…spoiler alert…progress finally! That is coming up in a couple of weeks. A funny thing with swimming, I love watching a three year old “walk” around a pool and life guards tweeting their whistles and calling out “Walk!” over and over while the three year old continues on oblivious to the problem. Anyone who knows a three year old knows that “walk” to them is more like a trot. It is SO HARD to walk! After getting some good giggles, I had a talk with her and she has been trying harder. But it takes her full concentration to actually walk. Full.

SUMMER
Brinley really likes her routine and schedule. She also has a lot of fun with her siblings. Summer and siblings being home is fun for her, but also very stressful. It is like she has this stimulation overload combined with being thrown off her schedule. In the first few days the kids were home, she would get really frustrated if she was trying to talk to me but couldn’t get a word in. She quickly got used to the new “routine” of having kids home, and she LOVES having them home to play with all day every day, but I have a feeling she will be okay with school starting again. I think it will just give her a sense of calm.

SCHEDULE
Here is what was pretty consistent:

8:30 or 9:00–wake up/get ready/eat breakfast
9:30–play with siblings
usually independent play for an hour in between now and lunch
12:00 –lunch. Then play.
2:30–Nap
4:30 or 5:00–Wake up. Eat dinner. Then family time.
8:00–Get ready for bedtime
8:30 or 9:00–Bedtime

You can easily see she doesn’t have a ton of structure. It isn’t ideal long-term, but during the school year she doesn’t see her siblings for most of each day, so I like for her to have as much time with them as possible in the summer. We do have chores in there each day, too, but the time of day varies.

  1. Hi Val, thanks for this post. I was wondering about your comment on chores. You said the time you do chores varies. So I was wondering how do you transition the kids into chores if they are playing. Do you just tell them its time for chores now? I guess im thinking about chores like vacuuming, dusting etc rather than time specific chores like setting the table for dinner. Also do the children all do their chores at the same time in the summer holidays?ThanksJerusha
