So if your baby wakes up after 45 min. and she might be hungry, and you feed her, do you then feed her at the regular time? or do you wait 4 hrs. until you feed her again (like normal feeding time).

You have to decide exactly what you want to do. I would keep the eat/wake/sleep thing going. If she was just extra hungry that one time, there is a chance she will take a longer nap for her next nap and get close to the regular feeding time. So I would put baby down for the next nap when needed, then see what she does. If she takes a longer nap to make up for the shorter one, let her. If she needs to eat the normal 4 hour interval.

love your blog! it is so helpful for this 1st time mom trying to be successful with BW! i have a couple of questions i was hoping you could answer. my 9 week old son is having trouble with his daily naps: after 10, 1, & 4 o’clock feedings. he will wake up after 45 min. i’ve tried to let him CIO, but he will cry for an hour & a half until the next feeding. i’ve tried feeding him, but he just falls asleep. i’ve tried putting him to sleep earlier, but he still wakes up. so, i’m not sure what to do there. his naps after 7 am & 7 pm are great – he sleeps for at least 2 hours and i have to wake him up to feed him. should i change that? he is still waking up at 3 or 3:30 am to eat – is that still ok, or should i try to get him to sleep through the night already? thanks for any help you can give me! 🙂

Hi Ashley, For STTN, he is still young enough that a feeding in the night is fine. 15% of BW babies don’t sleep through on own until they are 12 weeks old. However, I do have a friend that did CIO with her daughter at 9 weeks successfully. If you are sure he doesn’t need it, you can do CIO, but if you aren’t sure, I would still just feed him.For the naps that are good vs. not good, I would try to take note of what is different. Every detail can help you pinpoint the reason. What is the waketime length? What is the temperature in the house? How is he dressed? What were waketime activities? What was outside noise like? etc. Take note of it and see if you can see any pattern that gives you an indication for the waking. 1. Hi! I love your blog! It has been a huge blessing to me as a new mom! My son is just over 3 months old – he is a pretty big baby just in case that impacts what I should be doing…at 2 months he was 27 inches and 14+ lbs. I have no idea what he is now, but definitely getting bigger all the time! He has been taking about 40-45 minute naps now for over a month or more. Every now and then he has a 1.5-2 hour nap first thing in the morning or if he is in his car seat for his nap. I have tried putting him down sooner (we have found that about an hour is good waketime for him – in the mornings sometimes he shows signs at 40 min, in the daytime and evening sometimes never shows signs but we put him down no more than 1 hr 15 min) but that hasn’t helped. Is putting him down earlier supposed to work right away or do I need to try an entire day of sticking to a much shorter waketime? I have had him on a 2.5 hr schedule since he started napping poorly and he almost always eats a full meal. Whenever he takes long naps, though, he eats really well…and lately sometimes he just refuses to eat at 2.5 hrs…so I know he could stand a 3 hr schedule. The nap problem keeps me from doing this, though. Another thing is that he started sleeping 7-8 hrs through the night at about 11 weeks…did it for 6 days straight and then stopped for a week, did one night again, and then woke up again last night. I am giving him his last night feed around 10:30-11. Whenever he wakes in the middle of the night (4-5) he eats a full meal then sometimes won’t eat well in the morning around 7 or 7:30 but sometimes does. I feel like I don’t see anything consistent to explain all this – but I think I might just not have great perspective because I am in the midst of it. I have tried the swing when he wakes early from his naps – sometimes he goes back to sleep after 20-25 min of just sitting there calmly…sometimes he just sits there. My fear with doing CIO in the middle of a nap is what if he is really hungry? He fusses/cries for 5-10 min average when going down for a nap. He is fine going to sleep at night…Sorry this comment was so unorganized! I appreciate any help you have time to give! You and your blog are such a blessing!!

  2. Putting him down earlier should help right away unless he is overly tired already. It might all be tied to him just not being “expert” at self-soothing yet. One reason I would think that is that he sleeps well in the carseat–a place you don’t self-soothe. So as he practices that, he should get better. Be sure to check out all of the 45 minute posts by clicking on the blog label “45 minute naps.” I also suggest you keep a log about everything you are trying to figure out so you can be sure of what is going on as much as possible. see:BW Tips and Tricks: Keep a Log: http://babywisemom.blogspot.com/2007/12/tips-and-tricks-keep-log.html

  3. Thanks so much for your response! I went through the other 45 minute posts over and over again trying to see if anything ‘clicked’ in my mind…I think I kind of knew that the problem wasn’t a waketime or hunger problem because of the troubleshooting I had done so far (thanks to your blog!!). I don’t know if I would ever have known what to do if it weren’t for this site. Anyway, the other day I just decided to leave him in his crib for his naptime (I went for 2 hours because he can be up for 55-60 min during the day and he doesn’t eat well when I try and get him to eat every 2 1/2 hours). Well, it was a rough day, but after just one day I saw his pattern and knew that it is what you thought – a self-soothing thing. For all his naps that day he slept 45 min, woke and cried/fussed and then slept off and on for 45 minutes, and then would fall back asleep for at least 30 min and I ended up having to go in and wake him up to eat! The great part was that after one of those naps he woke and was looking around happy and talking! The next day was better – first nap it took 35 min and the next there was about 10 min. The days since then have been different because we had to do some traveling, but I am committed to this and helping him learn! I already see fruit with his predictability and he is eating better, too! So, I wanted to say thanks SO much for your blog and for your advice. I also wanted to encourage anyone else out there who is having this problem…I was afraid to do the CIO thing in the nap for fear of missing a feeding problem or something…but I am SO glad I did it because now I know what he needs and what he is capable of. Thanks and there really is no way I would have gotten to this point without all of your help through your blog…I am feeling so much more energized in every way just seeing a little fruit from only a couple of days of this! THANKS!!

  4. First of all I want to say how much I LOVE your blog!!! I have been using it almost every day to troubleshoot with my now 9 week old as we try to implement BW. Thank you for all the time you put into helping the rest of us figure it out. I can pretty much echo what Ashley & Rhett said in the above post concerning their 9 week old. I have tried just about everything I can think of…it's not hunger…I'm pretty sure it's not being overstimulated…I've tried going down earlier and a little later…I've also checked all the external factors to make sure there's nothing that would be waking him up. Do I need to let him cry it out to develop his ability to self-soothe? Just today he woke up after about 45 minutes, so I went in and put the pacifier in his mouth and he fell back asleep but only for a little while before waking again. I'm struggling with letting him CIO during nap time even though he does it when he goes down and it only lasts a brief while. The couple times I've tried it I gave in after about 10 or 15 minutes because he just seemed to worked up to get himself back to sleep. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

  5. SarahE, I am not one to do CIO mid-nap at that young of an age. That is a call you will have to make. Other than that, if you have ruled out hunger, pain, temperature, waketime length, etc, then it would have to fall into a category of "part of the learning process" or "phase" and I would just help him back to sleep like you are.But since he wakes again after he goes back to sleep so soon, I would say it is because of some sort of discomfort, whether gas or hunger or something similar.

  6. Thanks so much for getting back to me! I was so glad to hear you say you're not a fan of CIO at this young of an age. I'm not either! I do believe it's a learning process for him. We've done the swing and that's helped. Today he went down for his nap at 8:00, slept till 8:45, woke up happy (I have a video monitor that I absolutely love!), started to fuss a little at 9:00, settled down at 9:05, fussed again for another 5 minutes and fell asleep at 9:20. I definitely think he's learning to put himself back to sleep. I think the waking up became a habit after a growth spurt…just a guess. 🙂 Thanks again for your blog and for replying to my post! ~ Sarah

  8. I really like your blog and its information. I don't use BabyWise because my daughter has reflux, but it still have given me several ideas. I have a question about the 45 min intruder. My baby girl will be 10 weeks in 2 days. She has been doing the 45 min nap thing for about a week and a half now. We don't do CIO because she has reflux and it makes it worse and she ends up choking and wheezing after only 5-7 min of crying. She goes down fairly easily, but has to be basically asleep. Usually by the time we do rocking, singing and then humming for 5-7 min, she is asleep. She usually sleeps for about 40-45 min and you can almost time when she will wake up. I have not been able to get past this so far. I've tried feeding, pacifiers, early nap time, late nap time, etc. I'm pretty sure it's only a transition problem because a few times I've just held her (she was so over tired and I needed her to sleep) and I noticed at exactly 45 min area her breathing would change and then she would stir and slightly wake up. I would rock a little and then stay still and she would go back to sleep and return to normal breathing after about 10 min. I have put her down in her crib after this transition a few times and she will usually sleep another 1-2 hours. Does this sound like a transition issue? I hope she outgrows it soon. Anything I can do to help her without doing CIO? She doesn't like sleeping in a swing, car seat or bouncer, so no options there. Thank you!

  9. Hello! I need help with my little one. She is 3 1/2 months old, and she's been doing the 45 minute nap thing for about a week now. I know this doesn't sound like a long time, but I can't seem to find out why it's happening and it's unusual for her. She wakes up cranky and if I leave her to go back to sleep, she'll work herself up to a screaming fit and it's very difficult to calm her down. I've left her for an hour like this trying to let her calm back down and it wasn't happening. She's also not hungry enough to take a full feeding. She'll drink maybe 3-4 ounces then get bored, whereas she drinks 6-8 ounces for a full feeding. If I let her get up, she's cranky again within 10-15 minutes but won't go back to bed. Yesterday, I just cried because by the end of the day she was so exhausted that she just screamed. She's really hard to predict when it comes to sleepiness – she'll just start acting a little cranky around 2 hours of awake time (basing this off of previous good naps and her nighttime sleep, which is always good). I would appreciate any advice!

  10. I’ve been reading your blog and it has been so helpful. I have a 6.5 month old who sleeps from 7 to 7 almost every night. He’s naps however… he has been sleeping 15 to 20 minutes and wakes up. It has been about 3mknths and I can’t seem to,get him to sleep longer. He has 3 naps a day. Ithe first 3 months were a no brainer cause he was a great sleeper from the get go. But I messed up his schedule when he transitioned from 4 Napa’s to 3. I just don’t know what to do anymore. He’ll CIO till his next feed. What do you advise?
