It’s A…

I had my ultrasound last week to find out the gender of our baby.

Going into the ultrasound, I was 99% positive I was carrying a boy. You might remember me mentioning this in a post last week. This pregnancy has been just like my two other boy pregnancies (I lost a boy at 20 weeks). Nothing like my one girl pregnancy. The only reason it was 99% rather than 100% was so I could feign some level of humility. In reality, I was 100% positive. I have blue paint samples and have been racking my brain for boy names. I have been remembering Brayden’s little boy baby clothes with anticipation of getting them out of storage. I have been looking at cute little boy toys in the stores. I was sure.

We had a tricky time getting baby to show off the gender. I wasn’t terribly concerned because of my level of confidence, but I did a little dance to get the baby to move anyway. It worked. We could see the baby. When we did the ultrasound tech said, “You guys are having a…girl.”

I replied, “What?”

“A girl,” he said again, this time with less shock. He already knew of my certainty that this was a boy, “Usually the mother is right.”

Ha! Not me. I am ALWAYS wrong. Except with Kaitlyn because by that time I had been wrong twice and was done making guesses. So I was neither right nor wrong. This time, I reverted back to my guessing ways with more force. I was wrong again. But this seemed impossible to me.

“Definitely a girl. She is doing a spread eagle for us. There are no boy parts there.”

I am no ultrasound guru, but I have seen enough to know what I am looking at. I knew he was right. That was undeniably a girl.

“Are you sure there isn’t a boy in there too?” I asked. I wasn’t kidding when I asked this question; that is how sure I was it was a boy.

He chuckled and said while that does happen, he has only been wrong about that once, and that was when the woman had three rather than two. He assured me there was only one.

I have never been more shocked in my life. When we left the hospital, I honestly couldn’t even form a complete sentence, which is the first time since I was a pre-toddler that has happened. This is the reason I do not wait until I am delivering the baby to find out the gender. I don’t do surprises. I told my husband in order for me to wait until delivery, I would have to have a lobotomy–and I wasn’t kidding!

So we are having a girl. Despite the shock (which I think by now has worn off), we are excited. Hopefully the teenage years won’t be too crazy with two girls less than two years apart from each other 🙂

  1. Congratulations! That’s hilarious how sure you were that she was a boy. It’ll definitely be fun for you, though! Have fun thinking of girl names and everything now!

  2. WOW! Congrats. If she’s anything like Kaitlyn at least you’ll have an easy baby, even if the teenage years are a struggle!

  5. Congratulations! I am always wrong too…3 times now. Plus, I can’t take surprises either. I’ve been shocked 3 times now at the ultrasounds. :)I have two girls 17 months apart. They are 4 and 2 1/2 yrs right now and are the BEST friends ever. I was nervous about it too, but so far so good! I love watching them play house and dolls with their imaginations working together. They take care of each other too. You’ll love it!

  6. I know Rachel, I said to my husband, “Well, if she is anything like Kaitlyn, bring her on!” I don’t know if a baby as easy as Kaitlyn is one you get more than once in a lifetime though 🙂 We shall see.

  7. Thanks Susanne! I hope they will be best little friends too. I have heard so many stories of girls that close hating each other, but also many of them being the best for friends. Brayden and Kaitlyn adore each other, so hopefully baby three will roll right in.

  8. Christie, you amaze me! Girls can honestly be hard for me because I am not really into drama, and some (many) girls are very dramatic 🙂 I could have easily handled a house of boys. But I of course love my sweet Kaitlyn. Now I get two princesses 🙂

  9. So funny. Congratulations! I love your sense of humor. I was pretty sure I was having a boy going in to our ultrasound also. I was right, but I had genetics on my side. There hasn’t been a girl on my husbands line for generations. Of course the next one will undoubtedly be a girl. I agree that I would be much better with a house full of boys. Oh, and I would need a lobotomy also to wait to find out the sex.

  10. Hey congrats! Although you never know, we left our first ultrasound being told that it was 100% a girl-“a perfect girls bum” is the way it was explained to us. I had to go back a second time just to be sure-I didn’t feel it was right.Turns out the second time it was 100% boy!!And let me tell ya-talk about drama!! This poor boy is full of it. Trying to sit up right if he loses his balance-even if he falls into a bunch of pillows I have set up-or if his dad catches him before he hits as happened last night-he still breaks out into tears and the rest of the playtime is ruined with him reaching for me to pick him up while tears stream down his face!! Ha-if girls are more drama-I’m not sure what I would do! hehehehe!Yeah for you though!! It will be fun to hear name ideas and I promise I won’t make fun of any names-shoot, mine kids name is Scooter! :0)

  11. Congrats! I thought for sure Caden was a girl too! I always feel so funny when people say they were 100% sure and they end up being just that! How fun! Congrats!!

  12. Congrats! What a surprise! Hate to break it to ya, but the teenage years may be tough on you! I’m only speaking from actually being a teenage girl with 2 sisters all about 2 years a part! But, here’s a ray of hope… my parents didn’t have the Ezzos’ resources to guide them! That would’ve really helped with 3 hormonal teen girls.

  13. Hi! I’m new here! Congrats on girl #2! I have a 12 week old little girl, Kiley. We just started Babywise methods yesterday and I’m already seeing a HUGE difference! She’s finally napping better, is eating better (no more grazing) and slept through the night last night! She likes the structure and needs her down time since she’s so alert and active now. But I have a question–what do you do during the day when you want to get out of the house? I can try to plan around the schedule, but there will be some days where we’re gone all day. Like tomorrow–I’m going shopping all day. Should I be as rigid? Should I try to get her down for an extra long nap before we go? What do you suggest? Thanks in advance!!

  14. G-Mans Mama, Thanks! Both of our families are the opposite; boys are hard to come by. My husband is the only male in his family and I have no brothers. We are lucky to have one I think 🙂

  15. Lorri, Thanks! I do worry about ultrasounds being wrong, but at least I will have at least one more before the baby is due.

  17. Weafer Family, see this post: Let Your Schedule Serve You: You Don’t Serve Your Schedule (Don’t Stress): http://babywisemom.blogspot.com/2007/12/let-your-schedule-serve-you-you-dont.htmlAlong with that post, if she will take a longer nap before you go out, let her take it, but she might not. While you are out shopping, try to keep her on the routine as much as possible. Get her feedings in and try to get her to sleep when she should. You might need to do a longer nap when you get home, also. While you are training, do try to keep consistency as much as possible. It will make the training process easier and make it so you can be more flexible in the future.

  18. Congratulations! I don’t think I’ve posted before, so I wanted to say thank you so much for this blog. I really wish I had known about it before I had my duaghter… It would have made things so much easier for me. (and my friend who I bugged constantly with questions!) I found it when she was about 4(now 8 months) months old, so I will still get plenty of use out of it – but those first months with a first child… Ah – so many questions. Anyway – thanks again. You were right when you said there is nothing but negativity online regarding Babywise. It’s so frustrating.Rachel

  19. I can’t believe I missed this post. I just love your blog, and I’m so excited for you and your little baby-to-be! I was pretty sure we were having a girl, but when we went to our 20 week ultrasound, we found out we were having a boy, and a boy. Two babies and both of them boys. I tell everyone that we were wrong twice. Good thing babies are wonderful, boy or girl. Congrats again!

  20. Thanks Kristi! I have to admit, I am relieved that the news wasn’t that there were two in there. I would be so overwhelmed!

  21. Congrats! My first two are 20 months apart and it was pretty easy (boy and girl) my third was just born 3 weeks ago… 5 years after the second and it’s like starting all over again! I know what you mean about teenage years and girls, I only have one girl and I am dreading it!

  22. Thanks Em! That is one reason I wanted mine so close…so I don’t quite move out of the baby ways before getting a new one 🙂 But with my second, many things did feel like starting over (or bad reminders…like what the lack of sleep does to you 🙂 ).

  23. I too am amazed at how technology can answer our questions (almost) instantly. With 3D ultrasounds , I also saw the face of our baby a few months before due. Amazing!
