McKenna Baby Summary: Week 46

Schedule and routine for a 45-46 week old baby. Get info on this 10 month old daily schedule and routine for each day and know how to structure your day.

46 week old baby

Time for the weekly report. I don’t think there was much of note going on this week. I guess sometimes no news is good news 🙂

NURSING

All is well. We are nursing 4 times each day.

SOLIDS/FINGER FOODS

A notable food she tried this week that she now loves is black beans. She really couldn’t get enough. I put some in Taco Soup for dinner one night, then subsequently fed all of my black beans to her. My husband says the black beans were a nice addition to the soup 🙂

ECZEMA

We have no signs of eczema at the moment. I think that our water softener is very helpful. We got it in mid-December. It seems that with it, I only need to lotion when we do baths, which is every other day. Without the water softener, I need to lotion every day.

There are other factors. I take my vitamin D3, which I think helps. I take fish oil, which might help. I also use lotions that I think help. Anyway, I will be doing a master post on eczema pretty soon. I want to do one more poll, then I will do the post. So, if you have any eczema tips to share that you haven’t ever shared before, please add! I will be sharing reader tips in the post.

DROPPING THIRD NAP

I would consider her third nap dropped. She took it one or two times this week, and one of those times isn’t technically “third” since it was on Sunday and she missed her second nap 🙂 I still leave the option open for taking the third nap if she needs it, but I would say it is dropped for the most part.

OUR SCHEDULE

8:15 AM–wake, nurse, solids (prunes or peaches/apricots and oatmeal). This is when we do a bath and independent playtime. We then do sibling playtime.
10:15 AM–nap.
12:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (green veggie and applesauce. Sometimes mix with blueberries or cherries). She then “helps” me put Brayden in rest time (which just means telling him to go) and Kaitlyn down for her nap. This is then free play with me in the same room.
2:20 PM–nap
4:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (yellow veggie and bananas or pears). Then time with Daddy.
5:30ish PM–dinner with family. Finger foods and what we are having. Then time with family.
7:15-7:30 PM–nurse, PJs, story, prayers, bed.

  1. Val, I have a question. When you do independent playtime, how do you separate the kids? I try independent playtime with my kids and it always ends up with them getting into each others toys and it all breaks apart. I tried putting them in their rooms, not a good idea, they just attempted to escape the whole time.Any thoughts?

  2. I'm pretty sure Val does room time with her kids in their rooms for independent play, but I'm sure she will answer for herself too:)Also, I am working up some preliminary schedules for when our second baby comes and I'm just wondering when you will move McKenna's (sp?) breakfast time to be with the other kids? When you're done nursing? I was also wondering if you could (or if you already have it if you could tell me where) show what your tandem schedules look like? I think it would be helpful to see what braydon does all day, what Kaitlyn does, then McKenna and be able to put them side by side to see how they work. I'm trying to work that out myself right now. If you don't have the time I totally understand! I can make it through:) And check some schedules on babycenter too!

  3. Hi Val — do you feed McKenna any meat protein (fish, chicken, beef)? Also, what about other carbohydrates such as whole grain breads, pastas or rice? Just wondering if it's better to hold off on all that and keep it to fruit and veggies (which it seems like you're doing aside from the oatmeal).Re: eczema, I'm assuming Mckenna hasn't tried eggs? If so, that could be it…

  5. Hi Val,I know I made a comment months ago about how eczema could be a sign of a food allergy and I was hoping you could include that in your post about eczema. It was the biggest sign that my ds was allergic to several foods, and we completely ignored it! The other signs were fussiness, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty gaining weight. He was never labeled "failure to thrive" because he never lost any weight and was right where he should be developmentally, but he never really gained much weight. It wasn't until I stopped breastfeeding him and gave him some formula that he broke out in hives. We then took him to an allergist and had him tested. Turns out he was allergic to several different foods, including milk. Obviously eczema doesn't always mean allergies, but sometimes it does. If anyone suspects allergies, it's worth talking about it to your pediatrician or an allergist!

  6. Hi. I noticed that McKenna's first awake time is longer than the second. Is that normal? I thought the awake times started out short and got longer throughout the day. I'm wondering because my baby's schedule is a bit messed up right now. Her first awake time is 1 hr 20 min., which seems to be perfect for her, she sleeps for 2 hours. For the next awake time, I'm having a hard time determining her sleepy signs. It seems to be 2 hours…and I thought she was napping for 1.5hrs. But we recently purchased a video monitor and saw that she wasn't sleeping, only being very quiet. Turns out, it takes her 3o min to fall asleep (not normal, usually 5-8 min.) and she only sleeps 45 min. Then she plays for a bit, until she is bored and makes some noise. If we hadn't bought the monitor I wouldn't have known she wasn't sleeping.2 hours after she "wakes" she needs another nap, which she falls asleep GREAT for, for 1.5 hrs.She is the same age as McKenna..only a few days apart, I think. What am I doing wrong? Is her awake time too short, or too long? How do I fix the second nap? Thanks. 🙂

  7. Val,About roomtime.. I read in the Toddlerwise book that you can use a baby gate in the doorway of their room for awhile until they can learn to respect the boundaries that you set for them. Also, when starting out, I would use a timer and set it for 15 to 20 minutes and not get them until the timer goes off. Not sure how old your children are, but make sure the room is safe. Also, they are not allowed to ransack the room, obviously.

  8. Val, when started room time with my daughter, I set the timer for 5 minutes. I would show her the toys I put out for her in her room and then leave and close the door behind me. For a week or so, she would scream and hit the door the whole five minutes. Then she started to only cry for 2 or 3 minutes and then actually start to play. This gradually progressed to her playing happily for 5 minutes and then I started to increase the time slowly. We tried for a while without the timer and saw no improvement–I really think the timer helps them know that the timer ends room time, not their crying. I know it can take a while to get it going, but now that it is going well it is so worth it! Good luck!

  9. Val, Megan is right. I do independent play in their bedrooms. It doesn't have to be in a bedroom. It can be in any room–but I definitely would have them separate.Initially, I do shut the door. Kaitlyn now does it with the door open, but Brayden still shuts his door.I would probably set a timer and put them in the room and just ignore the door kicking. You could use a baby gate, but my guess is if they attack the door, the gate wouldn't do much :)See the labels "indepenent playtime" and "roomtime" for lots more info.

  10. Megan,My plan is for McKenna's breakfast to be with us when she is done nursing. That way I can still be mobile and able to help Brayden and Kaitlyn as needed. For tandem schedules, to to the sample schedules blog label and scroll down to find "sample schedules: tandem schedules"I also have a trio schedules under that same label.A bit of advice. I would plan a few different options. Have one that starts the day with baby first and one that starts the day with toddler first. You never know if baby will be an early morning person or not. Having the options in place seems to help (at least it did me 🙂 ). Good luck!

  11. Daisy,I rarely feed McKenna meat. She gets it only if I have cooked a really, really tender meat. I am just kind of paranoid about the chewing without teeth. She actually LOVES carbs. Just like her mommy 🙂 She eats rolls and pastas. I share my rice with her when we have it. She eats that stuff as finger foods while we eat dinner (along with other finger foods). She hasn't had eggs, even though she begs for them every time she sees them 🙂

  12. Emily, yes, I have read it. I would say it is worth getting. It wasn't around "back in my day." I did fine, but Toddlerwise really applies better to 18 months and older, so I think it is good they have the pretoddlerwise out. I would do pretoddlerwise, and at about 14 months or so read toddlerwise to look ahead.

  13. Renee,No, that is not normal at all. That is totally abnormal. I never noticed that 🙂 The waketimes are really close…and McKenna is a baby who shows cues, so I don't "live by the clock" with her. These times are the "about" of when I put her down, but it does fluctuate some. I guess that would be good to include in this weeks summary 🙂 For babies this age, most are probably in need of about 2 hour waketime. But that doesn't mean you should shorten the first one since it is working well. There are a couple of possibilities. One is that she is very overly tired by 2 hours and has a hard time settling. Another is that she isn't tired enough by 2 hours and plays for a while, but then plays too long and is overly tired by the time she goes to sleep.Typically, if a baby that age plays before going to sleep, I say waketime isn't long enough and try adding waketime in 5 minute increments. However, 2 hours is significantly longer than 1 hour 20 minutes. So if it were me, I think I would take her back to 1 hour 30 minutes and see what happens. Add 5 minutes until you get it right. If she cries, then it is probably too short. In that case, you might want to start at 2 hours and move backward by 5 minutes (you could do it this way anyway).I have a log for helping figure out waketime length in the chronicles yahoo group.
