McKenna 22 months old

This is a summary for McKenna 21-22 months old.

You know how toddlers go through this phase of, um, difficulty somewhere between 17-21 months old? Your sweet, darling child suddenly starts saying things like “no” and running the other way when you call? You start to wonder what happened to your little sweetie?

Well, that was McKenna. But I didn’t worry or stress because I had been there, done that. I knew she would snap out of it as fast as she snapped into it. 

She came out the other end with lots of new words and a sudden sentence speaker. She also came out the other end suddenly knowing what most of her ABCs are and the sound they make. These are things I have exposed her to, but previous to this last leap, every letter said “B.” It is so interesting how fast they change. Okay, what else…

EATING

Still an eater. And getting adventurous. One day, she took her olives and her apples, added them to her Mac & Cheese, took a bite and said, “Nummy!” Oh wow. That is gross. Maybe. I don’t know. I am not as brave as she is.

She is so great to cook for. The whole time she eats, she says, “Mmmm!!! Nummy! Num! Nummmmy!” She certainly loves her food.

PLAYTIME

Wow McKenna got messy during independent playtime this week. She helps me clean up when she is done, but wow it is messy. She actually has been improving back toward the not-such-a-big-mess side of things. 

She loves playing with her siblings more and more. She will even stop eating when they do so she can go play with them (rather than continuing on for another 30 minutes). 

NAPS

I moved her nap back this month. She now goes down at 1:30. I found she slept better going down at 1:30 than at 1:00. She wasn’t having bad naps before, but they are just even better now.

SLEEP

Night sleep is great again consistently now that she doesn’t miss a nap on Sunday. If you remember, she was waking around 9-10 PM with nightmares on Sunday nights. Now our church is at 9, so she gets her nap and has no nightmare problems!

ECZEMA

McKenna has no signs of Eczema right now.

YOUNGEST CHILD

A great blessing of being a mother is that you start to see things from many perspectives. As an oldest child myself, I understood youngest children claimed to have difficulties, but I didn’t see them 🙂 Now that I am the mother of a youngest child, I can see them. I see this little girl who wants to be just like her siblings, but gets left on the sidelines watching because she is too young much of the time. She really does handle it well, but anytime something new comes up, she is sad about it.

One example is Brayden and Kaitlyn are taking Ice Skating lessons. The first week, McKenna was determined to get out on that ice. She used her tenacity with everything she had. She sad down, held her foot up to me, and said sadly, “boot.” I felt bad for her. But of course you can’t let the youngest child do things she isn’t ready for. She will have her own benefits.

She is good now to sit next to me and watch the fun. 

ELMO

Whoever invented Elmo is a genius. All three of my children have had a serious love affair with Elmo. McKenna has recently started hers. She shrieks with delight when she sees him and says, “Elmo! Elmo!” Except she says it “Melmo!” If only I hadn’t put a picture of Elmo in her “quiet book.” 

STITCHES

McKenna got her stitches out, and yes, it took three adults to hold her down to get it done. She was not happy. Kaitlyn sat in a corner crying while Brayden lectured her not to cry because it would scare McKenna more. It was not a happy experience for anyone, but things are looking good. I have been keeping Aquaphor on her scar because I highly love that stuff. If you have any great recommendations for scars, I would love to hear them!

9:00–bath/get ready
10:00–sibling playtime
10:30–independent playtime11:30–learning time
12:00–lunch
1:30–nap
4:00/4:30: get up5:00–Dinner. Free play and family time
8:00–in bed by this time. Sometimes sooner.
