29 week old Brinley with her two sisters

This is a summary for Brinley’s 29th week; she was 28 weeks old.

NURSING

Nursing continued on as usual.

PLAYING

Brinley has no interest in sitting up to play right now. She wants to be on her feet, back, or tummy.

I did trick her into sitting, though. I found that if I set toys up just right by her, she will sit, and she can sit for a short time. Her balance is not great, obviously, because she doesn’t practice, but she is strong enough to do it.

TEETHING

Brinley has been having teething pain for what seems like forever. I started to think maybe I was a bit crazy and really didn’t know what teething looked like because the teething has been forever.

At the end of this week, however, we got a little hole for the tooth. I still don’t know for sure if it will come through (teeth can come and go, which is very annoying), but it is there.

I partially hope it goes away because I don’t love nursing babies with teeth. But I also partially hope it breaks through because it seems like the first tooth breaking through is one of the most painful, so I don’t want her teething pains to have been for naught.

She was a bit grumpy in association with her teeth. If she had pain reliever in her system, she was pretty okay, but when it had worn off, she was grumpy. Hyland’s Teething Tablets were very helpful when I wanted to take the edge off but didn’t want to pump her body with meds.

SOLIDS

I tried avocado this week. She absolutely does not like avocado. That was a no go. I don’t understand it!

You want to give new foods a chance. Offer them a few times before pausing. It isn’t unusual to dislike a food at first. But if your baby hates it, it is okay to set it aside for a while and try it again later.

SWADDLE

During the night one night this week, Brinley broke out of her swaddle blanket completely (reminder she has been sleeping with one arm in and one arm out). She slept through the night, but woke every 45 minutes noisy, then went back to sleep.

I got thinking maybe I should buy a bigger swaddle blanket. She is too tall for the ones I am using. But at the same time, I don’t want to spend money on one if I don’t need to.

The HALO SleepSack seemed like the perfect option, and a bonus is you can use it when you are done swaddling. It makes it easy to swaddle both arms, one arm, or no arms and it is still usable as a blanket. BUT I already have several sleep sacks for sleeping in, so I was still hesitant to buy it.

I decided to use my sewing picker to just unstitch the thread at the bottom so her feet could hang out without pulling the blanket down. You could also cut it open, but I wanted to pick the seam so I could sew it back to together so I can give the blanket to someone to use later. That worked!

  1. My daughter loved her avocado mixed with banana. I'd puree & freeze them separately but then thawed a cube of each and mixed them together. Her very favorite breakfast as a baby was oatmeal mixed with banana & avocado. LOVED it!

  2. My daughter is 6 months old, about a week younger than Brinley and we love reading your blog! It's been very helpful and encouraging along the way! We've done CIO from the beginning and for the past few months we've been able to put her in her crib awake for naps and at night and in five minutes she is asleep without so much as a peep. All of a sudden she has been screaming and crying for 30-45 minutes for all her naps and at bedtime. We've changed her diaper, fed her, burped her, reswaddled her, etc. We've trouble shooted everything we can think of! Eventually she just CIO. Is this 'normal' or a cause for concern? Thanks!

  3. My first boy HATED avocado. I tried and tried to no avail. He ate EVERYTHING else. Even boiled eggplant! The new boy (2 weeks older than B) hated it first try but doesn't mind it too much now. Good luck! I think it has to be the right ripeness for him.

  4. I have a question about my baby who is almost 6 months next Thursday (26weeks now). Lately we've seemed to figure out morning nap. She has 2.15 of waketime and sleeps 1.45-2 hr nap. Then I do the same wake time for her second nap and she starts crying after 45 minutes, and doesn't fall back asleep. Then later in the day she's super crabby and ends up falling asleep later in a carseat or stroller if we're out. Makes me think nap is short as she's crabby and falls asleep later.(Shes been on a 4 hr schedule and 2 naps for awhile now). She's still waking at night once usually around 4/5am and then again at 745-8 for when we start the day. My first baby slept through the night at 4 months 8-8 so it's been a hard adjustment. Any advice is much welcomed and needed!

  5. Great idea about taking the stitching out of the sleepsack! Haha! Was just pondering this morning what I might do about baby-breakouts. Off to try it now! 🙂

  6. Bri I would think there is something off. I would consider waketime length maybe needing to be a bit longer. I would also wonder about teething. It could be that it is nothing, but I would definitely consider possible problems.

  7. Brandy I have wondered if the time of year is an issue–they really aren't very tasty here right now–and all of her other food for the most part has been food that was from my garden or my husband's grandparents garden–so obviously quite a bit more tasty than what you would buy at a grocery store.

  8. "Teeth can come and go, which is very annoying" – could you please give some more information on this? Our DD almost 11 MO, has pain issues first time around 3MO and we could see 2-3 teeth but they never broke through and then disappeared. This has been on and off for almost 9 month and still no teeth. My DH is starting to think I am crazy seeing teeth that are disappearing, but reading this post maybe it wasn't so crazy after all

  9. Hi Valerie,I really really appreciate your blog! My first baby is almost the exact same age as Brinley so I have been following these baby summaries religiously. I have a question for you. Does Brinley nap all the way up to her next feed. For instance, your schedule says nap at 9:15 and feed at noon. Is she taking a really long nap or are you no longer feeding her right when she wakes from a nap? I am struggling now that my daughter, Sloane, is having longer wake times. It seems like a long time to go between feeds if she has a longer wake time and long nap. That being said she seems to do fine with 4 feeds per day. Just curious how this works for you, if you are still devoted to the eat wake sleep schedule of less so now that she is not a newborn? Thank you SO much! -Alison in Seattle

  10. I second Alison's question of 3/18/13 in regards to whether it's time to move away from the eat-wake-sleep routine. I want to move to a four-hour schedule because my six-month-old is definitely capable of going that long in between feedings (evidenced by her not taking full feedings at 3 or 3.5 hours). However, she never sleeps more than 1.5 hours for her naps, and she can't do 2.5 hours of waketime on a consistent basis (especially earlier in the day), which is how long she would need to go in order to complete a 4-hour loop with only 1.5 hours of sleep. (And let's not even go into how long she'd need to be awake to complete a 4-hour loop when she only sleeps 45 minutes, which happens fairly frequently! I've been fighting the 45-minute intruder pretty regularly since she was about 2 months old; after hours of pouring over your blog and troubleshooting like mad, I've finally decided to focus on making sure she's well-rested enough to be happy and healthy, rather than worrying that she's not a perfect Babywise baby.) With that background, do you think I should break from the EASY routine and just feed her at set times each day, regardless of when or how long she naps? Also, do you think that set naps would serve us well at this point, or should I still be primarily concerned with reading her sleep cues? (I usually put her down once she's starting to get cranky and yawns.) Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.
