  1. Did you do blanket time with your child? Yes.If you did blanket time, what age did you start?Tried it at 9 months and it did NOT work, she just didn't seem to understand the idea and kept crawling off. Tried again at 14 months and it worked awesome, still doing it at age 2.5Did your child ever fight blanket time? Yes.If yes to 3, what age? How did you approach it? And how long did it last? At 9 months she just didn't seem to understand the idea, so we abandoned it for the time being. Tried again at 14 months and she got it within a couple days. At 2 years old she started fighting it again until I started using a kitchen timer, which she loves. What length of time did you start with for blanket time? 30 minutes. What length of time did you ultimately stick with for blanket time? At 18 months she easily did 45 minutes but now we're doing 20, it's the most she can do and still be happy. What time of day did you do blanket time? We used to do it in the morning before lunch. Now I sort of use it randomly, whenever I really need her in one spot for a while, sometimes during supper prep, or when I need to do something unexpected with her baby sister. Any blanket time testimonies or tips? I think it's an awesome tool and teaches skills that they don't learn with roomtime only (staying within boundaries that are not as defined as walls). My little girl is so busy and runs around the house constantly, from one activity to the next. Surprisingly, she LOVES blanket time and I think it is because she can actually focus on a couple toys. One tip I would have is to use a kitchen timer – both for her sake and mine (so I don't forget to get her off in good time). Also, use special toys that aren't available at other times of the day.

  2. Jolene says:First off, so encouraged by Lys! We started at around 11 months, and it was a fight to do 5 minutes most days (there were two days he did really well, but that's because it was a new, interesting toy). After trying for a month, we gave up for the time being because he just didn't seem to get the idea. Looking forward to trying again in a month or so!

  3. I was just checking back here to see everyone else's comments… I guess I wasn't too surprised. I get the idea that blanket time is not very popular among BW parents. I wonder why? To me it is SO convenient. Roomtime is great too, but you can't carry a safe playroom with you. Recently, we took a trip overseas as a family and roomtime just possible. But my daughter had blanket time all the same and it worked perfectly.

  4. Lys I think it is partly because people don't notice it talked about in the books. It is kind of not at at the forefront. I know more people do this, so I am surprised by the lack of response. But I do think you are right that a lot don't–probably at least half if not more don't do it.

  5. Can you explain and describe blanket time? When and how do I do this? I have an area (space of a rectangular big carpet) in my leaving room just for playing. My 7 month old just started crawling. She usually doesn't leave the play area unless I am on the other side of the living and she's trying to come towards me. Although we just recently started putting a play yard around the carpet, I close it when I need to walk away to get something done for a min. Is that consider blanket time??? or do I need to actually have a blanket and put it in a different location of the house? And how big should the blanket be? It sounds very interesting and useful if we were to go away or be in a diff. location.

    • The carpet can be blanket time if you minus the physical boundery. Read up on blanket time on my posts–if you go to the blog index you can find them, you you can click on the blanket time blog label.
