Poll Discussion: Potty Training

Today’s poll is on potty training! Potty training is one of my most dreaded tasks to do as a parent. Hopefully some questions will help us all get ideas for making it easier.

1. What age did you start the potty training process (the age when you started and your child actually moved to being potty trained–not an age where you started and realized the child wasn’t ready).

2. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained in the day?

3. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps?

4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night?

5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps?

6. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night?

7. What method did you use to potty train? (list either a book/method or briefly describe your own method).

8. How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training?

9. Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work?

10. Any words of advice for those potty training? (pep talks, signs of readiness, good ages, little tips to make it easier, etc).

Go ahead and answer for each of your children who is potty trained. You can either copy the questions, paste them into the comment, and answer under the question, or just number your answers 1-10.

  1. I am looking forward to some responses! I haven't yet potty trained my son (2 1/2) but I have been trying to gather as much information as I can and form an action plan before I get started. I am nervous! This is new and scary territory! 🙂

  3. 1. What age did you start the potty training process? Daughter–20 mo; Son–31 mo. 2. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained in the day? Daughter and son– a couple of days3. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps? underwear for both4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night? Pull ups at night until they refused them (daughter wore them for a few mo. son for a couple of nights)5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps? a couple of days6. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night? surprisingly, just a couple of days for both daughter (20 mo) and son (31 mo)7. What method did you use to potty train? (list either a book/method or briefly describe your own method). Stayed home for several days in a row, bare bottomed and hung out near the bathroom. RUN to the potty when they start to go and lots of praise when they make it to the toilet. 8. How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training? Skip it.9. Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work? Allowed to get out of bed once to use the toilet during naps, then no more. It worked fine…10. Any words of advice for those potty training? (pep talks, signs of readiness, good ages, little tips to make it easier, etc). Hang in there and if you know they are ready, keep at it and make sure you give lots of praise when they go. Use treats if necessary!

  4. 1. Girl: 34 months2. 4 days3. underwear4. underwear5. 4 days6. she was night trained (dry diapers) before we started7. naked outside with potty seat, lots of juice, praise when successful8. skip it9. skipped IPT, naps and night – never asked, she stayed dry10. wait until they are really ready, don't start too soon. I felt like she was late (34 months, girl) but we had tried twice before unsuccessfully which was awful. I ended up telling her, "You can only go to preschool if you stay dry" and that worked!

  5. 1. What age did you start the potty training process – a little after and a little before 2 (both girls) 2. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained in the day? a couple days3. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps? yes4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night? yes5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps? it has yet to happen for my 2 yr old or my 4 yr old6. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night? same as above7. What method did you use to potty train? we do the "blitzkrieg" method (our name) – 1-3 days commando with lots of juice and practice and showing with a doll. I think babywise mentions this method and there was another book that talked about it as a party. I'm not sure what that book was called.8. How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training? because it was short, there wasn't much independent play time. They were stuck in the kitchen-dining room area (hard floors) and we spent a lot of time together until I was confident there wouldn't be many accidents – I think the end of day 2 or day 3 I let them in the living room and do more independent things.9. Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work? We do allow it. They're pretty good about it most of the time. Sometimes it's just an excuse, but usually they go. For a while it got ridiculous and we would give a small spanking if they said they had to go and didn't (if they'd already been out saying they had to go and had gone).10. Any words of advice for those potty training? (pep talks, signs of readiness, good ages, little tips to make it easier, etc). We loved this quick method and we've heard from lots of parents who had success – even a family with 3 boys who all did this successfully at 2 yrs old. Our kids have adjusted REALLY well – not perfectly – they both had setbacks for a time here or there – but it was good. Super stressful the first day – with my first daughter, the count was something like floor – 18, potty – 3 the first day. But it got SO much better the second day – only a few accidents – and almost none the second day. It's definitely worth a 3-5 day try, I think.

  6. 1. 22months-girl2. a few days3. started with diaper, then moved to underwear at about 25 mo.4. diaper, some nights dry others not.5. about 3-4 months6. not potty trained at night yet-has an interest, just don't feel like she's quite ready (now 32 mo)7. We did comando for a few days, taking her every 30 min to the potty to sit for a bit. If she went she got lots of praise and a mini m&m or sticker. If she didn't, then I'd set the timer and we'd try again in 5-10 min. Offered lots of water, milk, juice along with salty snacks. 8. I stayed close to her for the intense potty training time, now she is able to ask and take herself.9. Yes, she can ask to go potty during nap (anytime, although usually go before and she's fine). At night, she goes before bed, then gets one potty break that she's asked for so she doesn't use it as a stalling tactic. 10. When my daughter was ready to potty train, I just knew. We buckled down for a few days in the house and then ventured out and about. We used cloth trainers or underwear. Wearing jeans when we were out caught accidents better.

  7. Great topic I actually came on to look up potty training for my second, because I kinda forgot about what we did it the first time. My oldest is 4 1/2yrs old now. I'm answering for her. And hope to start my 2nd daughter soon she's 2 yrs 3m but not sure since she's recovering from chemo and just learned how to walk and isn't quite finished with her paci. She's sitting on the potty but has never actually gone.1. What age did you start the potty training process?18m for bm her choice and 2yrs for pee2. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained in the day? No bm accidents ever after 18 month she was actually scared of poop and couldn't stand it in her diaper. she started peeing in the potty at 2 and asked for real undies right away which was her only motive. I'd say 3 days including naps.3. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps? Undies4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night? Diaper till 2 1/2 yrs old. Which she hated we keep trying undies but if she had an accident the next day she would sleep in a diaper. Long process but she didn't wake up to go. We eventually set a timer to get her out of bed at midnight to go. That worked instantly she didn't like to be woke so she learned to hold it all night.5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps?Instantly we made sure there was no change for naps. Go before and after 6. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night?1/2 a yr.7. What method did you use to potty train? (list either a book/method or briefly describe your own method). My own that I learned from working in a center 2yr old classroom. Once child wants to sit on potty change diapers standing up until they actually go pee in potty (pip) even for poops. Have them bend over for poops to wipe for hard stools that won't be messy. Once they go pip cut the diapers and use undies only and stick to the 3 day method with a lot of one on one time and praise.8. How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training? Didn't know about ipt back then started using it at about 3yrs old.9. Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work? No for all, I knew she could handle it.10. Any words of advice for those potty training? (pep talks, signs of readiness, good ages, little tips to make it easier, etc).Never go back to diapers once on undies. even for changes like a new baby arrival stand your ground and believe they can, then they'll believe it too. Pull ups are a waist of money I have never seen them work well(fast) after 3 yrs in preschool and watching 50 kids or more get trained.

  8. Curretly doing it. My son is 2.5. Ran around naked or with underwear while he was awake. Still pull ups at nap and nighttime. Used m&ms as rewards. Don't do it! Made him constipated. Took much longer to get to go poop in the potty. Still has accidents after a month. ave him tiny pieces of a cookie.

  9. 1. What age did you start the potty training process? My son was 27 months.2. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained in the day? 5 months 3. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps? Diapers.4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night? Diapers, then switched to Pull-ups. My son had no problems peeing, but for pooping he would wait until he got his diaper on either during his nap or nighttime and then would do his business. The remedy for this with my son? The Pull-ups. We knew he wouldn't poop in his underwear so we told him he had some special underwear for bed (the Pull-ups). Knowing that these were "underwear", he immediately told us he had to poop. It was like turning on a light switch. Absolutely no accidents – from that point on he always informed us when he needed to poop. It took us a while to figure this out – I think if we would have given him the Pull-up sooner he would have been successful sooner.5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps? 5 months.6. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night? 5 months7. What method did you use to potty train? We started with Pottywise – because Babywise is so spot on I figured that this had to be the absolute best method ever. This was not so with my son. We did the whole doll thing, the treats just as the book describes, but my son just didn't get the connection. He is a smart child, but just didn't get where we were going with the whole process. Potty training ended up happening by accident for us. We knew that he would always pee when the water was running for his bath – so we ran the water and sat him on the toilet instead and he peed. We continued to do this for a while and started taking him to pee during the day at specific times. Soon he only peed in the potty – it would still be a while before he would tell us, but at least we were able to keep him dry during the day. The pooping came later as mentioned above. As much as I love Babywise, the Pottywise method didn't work for us and I'm more inclined to follow the Baby Whisperers approach. With our next son we will just start putting him on the toilet at times when we know he pees or poops – much like people in other countries do.8. How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training? I took him before IPT – much like having them go to the potty before church services begin so as not to have to get up during the worship.9. Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work? We did not allow him to get out of IPT, naps or night on his own – he had to call us for us to take him.10. Any words of advice for those potty training? Don't get one method or idea stuck in your head as the end all be all way to do it. I really though Pottywise would work just like the sleep training in Babywise but it didn't for my son. It ended up being a totally random thing that we did that ended up working. You know your child and how they will respond best. Although it is time consuming, I would consider how it is done in other countries – I've read that most other countries toilet train earlier than the US. I think we keep our kids in diapers too long because it's easier sometimes!

  10. 1. We bought a little potty and started introducing our kid to the idea somewhere between 18 and 24 months (we had him sit on the potty and go once a day before his bath), but we did not actually start full-on potty training until 27 months.2. 3 or 4 days. On day 6 or 7 he had a lot of accidents, but we figured out why and he hasn't had any since. He is 28 months now.3/5. Still in diapers for naps.4/6. Still in diapers for nighttime sleep.7. Pottywise progressive method. We cleared our schedule for 3-4 days, and then he was ready to take a weekend trip across the state.8. We just interrupted playtime to ask "are you dry?" and give a treat, or took him to the potty if it was time for that.9. If he told us he needed to potty, we let him stop whatever he was doing and go right away. After a few weeks, we realized that sometimes he was probably just playing a game. If he just went potty (which he does right before bed, etc.), then we just say "you can go potty after nap" or whatever and he is fine with it.10. Pottywise. Reward dryness, not just potty use. Make it fun and exciting.

  11. 1. What age did you start the potty training process- Boy started being serious at 2 1/22. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained in the day? He was pretty much accident free within 1 week-1.5 weeks3. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps? Pull ups for naps (still doing pull ups for nap at 34 months)4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night? pulls ups at night5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps? Not there yet- we wakes up dry most of the time6. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night? No where close yet7. What method did you use to potty train? (list either a book/method or briefly describe your own method). I read John Rosemond's "Toilet training without tantrums" and did the underwear only and multiple little potties throughout the house. It worked great! The only thing I didn't really follow was the no pullups at nap or bedtime- we still do that.8. How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training? We didn't do it. I was with him during any wake time- especially for the first 3-4 days.9. Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work? No- only if he tells me he needed to go, which is rare. I get him right up when he wakes up and he goes potty.10. Any words of advice for those potty training? Once you start, don't go back! It's confusing for the child. I did that several times and I could definitely tell that it confused him. A great thing I did was to start the potty training after nap time one day. That way we only had a half day of potty training the first day. I needed a break of running to the potty, cleaning the floor, changing underwear, etc. by the time we reached bedtime! It was rough the first couple of days- a lot of cleaning and accidents, but it dramatically improved after that! Just keep with it and stay calm! They will get it!

About 3 days. 3.Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps? diapers first, then pullups4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night? Same as above5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps? Eternity! Haha! He wasn't 100% until he was about 4.5 years old. 6.How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night?. 5.25 years old. We are finally there!7.What method did you use to potty train? (list either a book/method or briefly describe your own method). I tried to give my son a lot of juice so that he would have lots of opportunities to get it right, but I overdid that and it was a disaster. I had a book but I didn't like it very much and can't remember it's name. That is where that idiotic idea came from. 8.How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training? Didn't have IP. 9.Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work? At first, I just worried about days. Eventually, (hello! tired of buying pullups!!)I tried and tried to convince him to get out of bed and go potty if he needed to. He never did. I think he just slept through peeing. 10.Any words of advice for those potty training? Well, maybe a warning. I feel like I am still potty training my 6 year old boy sometimes. He has regressed so many times, especially with bm's. He would all the sudden start having accidents(pee and poop) after months of 0 accidents! Even now, he accidentally pees all over the floor when he goes poop sometimes. I also know my sister told me once not to worry about peeing at night, that once my son went to school he would probably stop. She was right. He did it on his own. My trying to push him earlier did no good! Please oh please let my girl be easier!!

  13. 1. 18 months I bought a potty and every night during books he sat on it and pretty quickly started to go every once in a while, we did this to make him comfortable with the idea and to begin getting into the habit of peeing before bedtime). 26 months old we actively potty trained.2. 4 days3. cold turkey, underwear all day, naps included.4. We used cloth diapers and we bought cloth trainers at the place I bought my diapers. They are underwear with a tad amount of padding and a removable insert to add additional padding. Only enough padding that they are wet all over but it does not make a big mess or puddle everywhere. He used those with the extra insert at night.5. 2-3 days6. About 8 weeks, but he wasn't having accidents every night just every now and then, about 8 weeks was when he stopped wearing the padded underwear and switched to just regular underwear7. His school has a strict potty training approach and extremely high success rate so I did what I was told – lol. They do not allow pull-ups AT ALL in the school, they are banned. When you say you are ready to actively potty train they tell you to bring about 8 pairs of clothes each day. You go cold-turkey and they have a timer and every 15 minutes on the dot they take those children that are "actively potty training" to the bathroom. They have them go in the same order so that not one kid has to wait longer than another. about 90% or the time all the kids are accident free by the end of the week.8. see above..he is in school so they did all the work, but like I said, every 15 minutes on the dot, whatever they were doing they stopped to go sit on the potty. 9. I never had to, I let him sleep and if he wet the bed I calmly said, "how sad, you pee peed in your underwear" then made him remove the clothes, and sheets from the bed (with supervision) and he helped me put in the washing machine and I maid him spray down an wipe the mattress pad. So he saw how much work was involved in the clean up and that he would have to do it. He only had a few accidents because he didn't want to clean it up. He has only woken up and called to us to go potty a few times. Even though he is 3 now and can use the regular potty, we keep a small potty in his room just in case he needs to go in the night. 10. My advice is to make it a normal thing. Let them watch you go, explain what you are doing (especially with poop, pooping in the potty takes a little longer for them to understand the urge and feelings). Introduce a potty in the bedtime routine when they are able to take instruction (i.e. 18 months was good for us). We did not try to do anything other than he sat on the potty while we read book and if he peed we praised him, if he didn't it was no big deal. COLD TURKEY, NO PULL-UPS, NO BACK AND FORTH WITH DIAPERS. Every 15 minutes consistently for several days until there are no accidents. If you work this is harder unless your childcare is open to doing this, if not, you may want to consider taking a Friday and Monday off and doing it over a long weekend or something. Some schools make you have the kids in pull-ups and this is hard because pull-ups are the worst thing for training (it will still get done, but it takes much longer, in my opinion and you will have more accidents after they get in underwear). I was very lucky, his school is AWESOME at potty training and no parents ever argue with their method because it works and we never had to do the hard work – lol!

Any words of advice for those potty training? (pep talks, signs of readiness, good ages, little tips to make it easier, etc). WAIT until they are ready. It may be hard, but my daughter potty trained herself naps and night in under a week. She convinced ME that she was ready for undies at night, haha! She was ready to wear princess panties and I told her the deal was, if she peed anywhere but the toilet, she didn't get her princess panties. She was old enough to understand and made the decision on her own with no forcing or coercion on my part.

It is hard and can be very discouraging at times, but we are so glad we stuck with it. My little man is very proud of himself.

  17. What age did you start the potty training process? We started putting her on every once in a while ever since she was about 3 months old, just to get used to the idea. At 14 months we got serious since she seemed ready. It's been 3 months now and she is dry all day with rare accidents (once a week or so?) but she still wears diapers for naps and bedtime.2. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained in the day? About a week.3. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for naps? Underwear, and diaper OVER underwear when we went somewhere during the training process. Still doing diaper for naps though they are almost always dry.4. Did you do underwear, diapers, or pull ups for night? Still doing diapers. 5. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for naps? I imagine she could go without diaper for naps since she is almost always dry… but I just don't want to risk it yet :-)6. How long did it take between the start of potty training and your child being potty trained for night? Not yet there.7. What method did you use to potty train? (list either a book/method or briefly describe your own method).Followed Emily's advice at journeyofparenthood. For a couple days, I set a timer every 20 minutes and put her on just for a little. She got the idea very fast. 8. How did you deal with Independent Playtime during potty training? I was doing blanket time. I would take her underwear off and put the potty on the blanket with her and she always went on it herself. 9. Did you allow your child to get out of bed for potty breaks at IPT, naps, and/or night? If so, how did that work? No, we haven't reached that stage yet.10. Any words of advice for those potty training? (pep talks, signs of readiness, good ages, little tips to make it easier, etc).It was way easier than I thought! My daughter loved the whole process and all the attention and cheers 🙂 One thing we did that helped was that ever since she was a newborn, if we noticed she was going potty (in her diaper or anywhere) we would use the same word. Incidentally, that happened to be the very first word she ever said 🙂 When potty training, she could say that word and tell me if she needed to go. It is so handy! I really think potty training was fun and gave me a huge sense of accomplishment! 🙂

Helpful is miralax and fiber gummies to keep it super soft and keep consistent (daily after lunch with one kid and before bed with my other)

  19. 1. What age did you start the potty training process (the age when you started and your child actually moved to being potty trained–not an age where you started and realized the child wasn't ready). 26 months2. 20. i have 3 girls, now 2months shy of 5,4,2 respectively.1. for #1, #2, i started potty training after they turned 2. #3, my nanny started her at abt 16-8months2. for #1, #2, i think it was about 3-4days. #3 is a little longer. we still put her on diapers but we put her to potty often too. so sometimes we missed and diapers were wet.3. diapers for naps for all 34. diapers for night for all 3.5. #1 was about 3 months, #2 was about 8 months (she is a very deep sleeper). #3 is still on diapers for naps/night.6. I can't really remember for #1 now but she refused diapers soon after, maybe about 6 months. but she was also having a lot of accidents. so we would give her a dream-pee before we slept. #2 was about 1-year. i remember her being in diapers even at 3yr-birthday.7. #1:gave her lotsa salty junk food and lotsa water, and get her to sit. then read her a book until she pee. and after that just bring her to potty regularly.for #2 & #3, it was easier as they had an example. they knew potty was to pee… just bring them to potty, whistle or 'shhhh' until something came out or they wanted to stand :P8.pee before IP and pee after IP9. naps/sleep in diapers. no problem. as they got bigger, i allowed one toilet-break, esp if they are having a hard time falling asleep.10. a good time to start is when your child is able to follow/understand instructions and able to give some cues. take time with night-training. diapers are much cheaper/easier option than having to wash bedsheets, not to mention the frustrations. my #1 would wet her bed consecutive for 5-6 nights then miraculously stop for a few months, and start wetting again!
