Baby Whisperer: Pacifiers

A basic summary of Tracy Hogg’s view of pacifiers is to not let your child get hooked on using it for sleep, but you can use it during wake time if needed and even in the middle of the night to help train baby to sleep through the night.

That is a basic summary. If you are one who wants to use a pacifier but also wants to prevent your child from getting addicted to it, I would recommend reading Hogg’s suggestions. For that reason, I will list page numbers I found helpful for pacifier use, and you can read her words first hand. This information is found in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg.

My daughter always seem to wake up at 5:30. I leave her in her crib to talk and try and pacify with a pacifer and try and to prolong her to start her day closer to 7.

  1. My 13 week old daughter is thankfully sleeping through the night (7pm-7am). Unfortunately, her parents are not!! We get up on average 4-5 times per night to put her paci back in her mouth. I am getting less sleep now than I did during the beginning weeks. Help! Should we make her quit cold turkey? And if so, how??? I read Hogg’s book and Babywise but still don’t know what the most affective approach is!

  2. unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with pacifiers so I don’t know what is best. I do know a lot of moms take away the pacifier at the age of your baby, and they seem to do it cold turkey. It will require CIO while she learns to soothe herself rather than rely on the pacifier. You might be interested in seeing the Babywise group on There are moms there who have been through taking the paci away that might be able to help.

  3. Hi! I read Tracy Boggs' book and basically have the textbook baby, except sleeping through the night. I follow everything she says and it all works! Although, I don't know why he won't sleep through the night, he started at 8 weeks sleeping 8-9hrs, then totally went back to every 3hrs(he is now 4months). Tracy talked about baby waking up at certain times maybe b/c of a habit and suggests using a pacifier to put him back to sleep. That does work, b/c now he will wake up within an hour, so that makes me wonder if he can't sleep without the extra milk…PLEASE HELP!! As of a few weeks ago, I haven't been able to go back to sleep very easily after a feeding, so I am getting a bit desperate :)Thanks, Nicole'

  4. Whoops, I meant…That DOESN'T work, b/c now he will wake up within an hour, so that makes me wonder if he can't sleep without the extra milk…
