Blog Face Lift

It might be my nesting instinct kicking in, but I feel the urge to give this blog a face lift. It has been the same since the day I started it back in November of 2007. It has grown and I think it is just time to do some reorganizing, cleaning, and rearranging.

Before I do so, I would like to hear from you. I know that whenever you change the look of a website, there are people opposed to it. My desire is to improve functionality, but I would also change the background.

My husband likes to say, “Do what you want, you will anyway” so I might do what I want anyway :). But if you have any comments about this (for or against), please leave a comment and let me know. If you have reasonable suggestions, go ahead and leave them and I will take them under advisement. Thanks!

I would say to go for a magazine style layout to make things easier to find. Amanda at Blogger Buster ( has some great templates.

I just found your site, thank you for all that you do to help us! Can you come and help me get her to sleep? I know you can’t…but oh how I wish someone could!

You could have some links that are listed/sorted by the age of the child. Just a thought. I think it’s great with or without it. Thanks for all you do to help us get through this! 🙂

I agree with Kristin. I have wanted to suggest this but just haven’t done it yet. I’d love to be able to go to certain links at whatever age my son is. Thanks!

I am with the other ladies who suggested being able to click on topics based on the age of your child. THat would be a great feature!

I think an Age feature would be nice, but I kinda like how you have it now. 🙂

If you could make the link to the blog index more obvious, I think that would help first time readers find the topics they are needing help with. Maybe a larger font size and place it at the top of the page? I had another thought for the blog index (that would take a ton of work and I don’t know if it would make enough of an improvement to justify the effort). It gets long to scroll down through the whole thing, so maybe on the index page you could have all the headings listed and they could be links to their own page where there could be links to each individual post. Like I said, it would be a lot of work, but it might make it easier for newcomers know what is on here and find what they are looking for. Regardless of your format, this blog is a life saver and has helped me so much as a first time mom. Thanks again!

I also like the idea of organizing posts by age, and making the index more prominent. I don’t think I even noticed it the first few times I visited the blog.

I think your content is fabulous. From a behind-the-scenes standpoint, I’d recommend switching to wordpress as you can do a lot more with layout and other fun stuff, but that may be more work than you’re looking for. 🙂

I love the age idea, but the blog is a lifesaver no matter what. 🙂

I love your blog and will read it no matter what you do. But I like the suggestions to add a ‘by age’ section. I love to be able to scroll through topics alphabetically, but it would be neat to be able to do a keyword search. Some way to type in a specific phrase and not have to skim through 30ish blog posts on schedules.

Everyone has good comments, so I will just say that changing the background would give the page a fresh face lift! Something springy! 🙂

There are some cute free backgrounds on www.thecutestblogontheblock.comI love how you have your articles organized by subject matter, so please don’t change that, but I have a hard time keeping track of what article I made a comment on and then if you comment back to me I can’t find that article again … maybe it’s me (I’m new to the blogger thing), but if there was an easier way to do that that’d be AWESOME! Have fun!Corinne

Firstly, thanks for all you do for us mommies out there – I visit your site regularly and as a first-time mom, find your blog to be really informative.I also love the ‘topic by age’ idea!

Funny, there is another Maureen reading your blog. The reason I used wordpress for my blog is that it allows for more white space on the page and the text is spaced out a bit more (maybe 1.5 spacing vs. single spacing). It makes it a little more readable which I thought was important considering my posts are long-ish like some of yours. But maybe you can do this with blogger? Whatever you decided to do, I’m sure it will look great. My DH says the same thing. I ask for his opinion and he asks me why I do because I will do what I want anyway. :)

Thanks for all of your comments! I am glad no one is revolting about a change. I love the by age idea. I have thought about it many times. It will take some time and work, but I will get on it. I want to make things as easy as possible. I will still have a regular index, along with blog labels, but then have an index by age.Jennifer, your idea for the blog index is good. It would be very time consuming, so I will put it on my list but it might not happen until my third baby is less time-consuming for me :)I am glad y’all told me about the index needing to be more prominent. I will move it up.For Maureen #1, I think you can do a keyword search in the upper left-hand corner.Krystal, yes that is something I am wanting to do. A new look, and probably change it around with the seasons (but, it would be my seasons. Sorry I know this is used globally. Plus I am sorry because it is winter where I live for a long time). Corinne, thanks for telling me about that–I use the cutestblog stuff on all of my other blogs. Um…yeah, I have a few blogs. To know where you made a comment, you need to check the box at the bottom of the comment window that says “Email follow-up comments to…” Then you should get an email when other comments are posted on that same post. Maureen #2 (Maurneen M) I never would have guessed there were two Maureens here! It really confuses me when people have the same name. I think there are at least ten different Stephanies.

Love the new layout. I would want to know myself, thought you might too: I have a high speed connection and it is taking a bit of time for the bkgnd to load. If you can make it a smaller size file without visibly degrading the resolution you might want to give that a try. Thanks for all you do.

  1. I know this is not the place to place my question but I was going thriugh the blog about the sippy cup – I’m planning to introduce the sippy cup next week, she turns 6months next week she is already on the bottle she weaned herself from the breast at 3months although I am still giving her breastmilk (expressing). I was wondering if I should give her milk from the sippy cup brfore giving her water. And my other question is when do you offer water/juice?

  2. I’m sad that parents are still following the dangerous advice of Ezzo. You do know that Babywise is linked with FTT and dehydration, correct and is strongly discouraged by the AAP. Please stop hurting babies and mothers with your blog!

  3. Sorry that person was saying bad things about you and Ezzo. I’m guessing she doesn’t realize that all our babies are healthy…and you’re helping us a ton! Thanks for all you do. 🙂

  4. C-lee,I would try breastmilk, but know it will likely take her time to get it.Neither of my kids liked juice. I tried giving it to both at 6 months, but they weren’t interested. I didn’t feel bad about that. See the blog label “juice” for more on juice. I gave water with finger foods just so they had something to drink. Since they were breastfed, that is what was available.

  5. Abbey, Factually, Babywise is NOT discouraged by the AAP, though that is a popular internet myth. You should visit the website of the AAP. You can also see for more information. Also, Babywise is not linked to FTT any more than anything else. One of my best friends is an AP mom, and her daughter was failure to thrive. If you are interested in more of my refutations on this, see Combating Babywise Myths #3: Your Baby Will Not Thrive:

  6. Christina,Thanks! I am honestly surprised I don’t get more dissenters. She is only my second in the year and three months that I have had this blog, so that is pretty good!
