    I have a question about my 6 month old daughter's nighttime sleep. She is on a 3.5-4 hr schedule and takes fantastic naps with no crying (2 2hr naps and 1 catnap). Within the past month she has started having a terrible time going to sleep at night. We put her down around 7 or 7:30 and she has been crying for an hour and half to 2 hours, basically until her dream feed. We check on her several times and there is never anything obviously wrong. She never had any trouble falling asleep, would just find her thumb and go right to bed, so this is unusual (but seems like it's becoming the new norm!) My concern is that we may be establishing a new pattern by giving her that feeding after she's been crying so long. I wondered if the catnap was interfering with bedtime, so we skipped it the past 2 days and the first day it worked like a charm and bedtime was perfect and the second day she cried more than ever at bedtime, so I can't tell yet. When I do feed her at 9 or 9:30, she takes a full feeding and dozes a little, but doesn't fall totally asleep in my arms. She is awake when I lay her down but goes right to sleep very easily. Not sure how to handle this bump in the road. Thanks so much, I love your blog and reference it often!

    Merideth I am not sure. Since she is only crying at bedtime, I think you can rule out sickness, pain, or discomfort. I would then say the catnap might be causing issues and would either eliminate or shorten it. Another option is to offer more mental/physical stimulation between the catnap and bedtime–unless you have recently increased it and in that case, I would cut back. The exact time of bedtime could also be a factor. Let me know if you can't get this figured out and we can post it as a "help a reader out" question to see if other moms have experience with this.
