  1. Hi Val, I have a question about my 2 1/2 yo old son doing independent playtime. He started doing IP more than a year ago, and has built up to about 1 hour 45 minutes. He was doing great…. but the last few months he's been just destroying the room, turning things upside down and making it look like a hurricane zone. I've rotated toys, taken out some toys so he couldn't mess them up, tried to use a gate, put him in time out etc, and I'm not sure what else to do. He's been testing the limits with other things too, so I've had to tighten up in my discipline. He has responded to that and improved…. but I don't know how to make him behave during IP. It's not that he just throws a few toys around… He literally turns the playpen upside down, moves furniture around, dumps out random boxes, and creates a gigantic mess. Please help! Thanks in advance 🙂

  2. He might be doing it for your attention. I personally would do this:1-Do what you can to minimize this. Remove the toys you can from his reach. 2-Don't do anything else until after independent play.3-Afterward, have him help clean up. 4-Have some physical exercise in the day somehow incase he has too much energy built up :)5-It might be that independent play is too long. If the mess comes after he has been in there for one hour, I would shorten playtime. You can either do two a day or just one shorter one a day. You don't need to do more than one hour.
