This is a summary for Brinley from 12.5 to 12.75 years old.
SLEEPING and EATING
Sleeping is good. There are no issues with sleeping.
Eating is “mid” as the teens say. She has a lot of foods she does not really like. I am not terribly stressed out by that because there was a time Kaitlyn was the same way and now she is very adventurous, but it does take effort on my part to make sure she is getting a variety of nutrients.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle school continues to be good. She has her friends and has made new friends. It is all good there. All of my girls decided this school year that they did not like the food at school. Well, they probably decided this long ago. But one of them said something about how they didn’t really eat their lunch at school because it was gross. I was like, “Why are we paying for food you are throwing away?” and we started doing home lunches. This has been good. They come home a lot less hungry because they eat their lunch. We use Bento style lunch boxes and it works very well!
As the year has gone on, she has gotten much more interested in fashion and hair, which I am actually happy about. She had zero interest before, so I am happy to see her taking more time to take care of herself. She hasn’t gone to a point of it being obsessive and she does not wear makeup or anything. She just cares more than zero.
Her greatest complaint about middle school is P.E. It is mixed with the boys and almost daily she has a story of a boy who has made a comment about girls not being as good as boys or being the reason a team lost. This is a neverending frustration for her. She also doesn’t like when girls do not participate and just stand to the side (but I get that if boys are making comments about them being no good) so she tries to rally the girls to join in. She LOVES P.E. other than that. She loves to play sports and has fun.
ACTIVITIES
Brinley has played soccer and continued her piano lessons during this time period. Soccer has been good. They did a winter tournament and are currently in the middle of their spring season. They moved up a level this spring and are doing very well so far! It is always fun to see kids improving.
She also volunteered to help with stage crew at the elementary musical this year. She had a lot of fun helping with that.
REFFING
This spring, Brinley started reffing rec soccer. So far it has been a good experience for her. She is able to make some money. Brayden made really good money over the years reffing competitive soccer. He started with rec. It is a good place to start. You can also start at a younger age. Hopefully, she will have the personality to handle reffing. Kaitlyn and McKenna both do not like it much and avoid it despite the lucrative paychecks.
PHONE
In case you are curious, Brinley does not have a phone that she takes to school. She has one at home that is basically a home phone that only works on WiFi and also has some money uploaded to it for texting (you never know if power will go out). She could bring that to school if she wanted, but it isn’t usable enough to make it worth the effort to do so. She has taken it to school, but decided it was too much hassle. She has also told me she doesn’t want to get addicted to a phone.
