This is a summary for Brinley from 13 to 13.25 years old.
SLEEPING and EATING
Sleeping and eating have been going well. I shared last time that she had been losing a lot of hair and, as a result, started eating a much more balanced diet. That has been very positive.
Sleep is going well. She manages her bedtime and wake-up time independently. My kids really don’t enjoy feeling tired, so they have typically been really good about self-managing sleep as they got older. She wakes up to an alarm each day.
I highly recommend training your kids to eventually wake up to an alarm. You don’t want to have morning battles where it feels like you versus your teen to get up each day. You also want them to feel like they need to be responsible and wake up when the alarm goes off. If they know they can ignore the alarm and you will watch them closely and make sure they get up on time, they won’t worry about getting up.
I am not suggesting you never wake your kids up if they oversleep at times (or if their alarm doesn’t go off). Just always remember that at this point in their lives, the stakes are low for mistakes. This is their training ground to learn how to be responsible and self-governing. It is okay for them to experience some consequences now so that when they become adults and move out, they can handle life without you there. That day comes much faster than you realize.
SCHOOL
Brinley is in 8th grade this year. So far, she is loving it! This is her last year of middle school before heading to high school. She has enjoyed her classes and has great friends. She has continued to make new friends.
ACTIVITIES
This has been a busy few months for Brinley. She had her fall soccer season and had fun with her team. She was also in a musical, The Little Mermaid Jr. She was Scuttle. She had a lot of fun and met lots of new friends.
She has also been taking piano lessons and is continuing to improve in her piano skills.
DOG CAREGIVER
When Kaitlyn moved out and went to college this fall, we needed someone to take over as Kaitlyn’s dog’s “mom” at home. The dog spends a lot of time with me each day, but she has always slept with Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn has been the primary person in charge of bathing her and feeding her.
Brinley took those things over and has adored the task. She loves having the dog sleep with her each night and is very attentive to her.
HAIR
Brinley has really focused on being able to do her hair all by herself. She has really liked heatless curls. It is a great way for her to do her own hair each morning.
