3 year old McKenna holding baby Brinley

This summary is for McKenna now that she is 3 years and 5 months old.

Eating was back to smooth this month. I had to make sure she ate enough at breakfast and just had her wait for morning snack time to eat again.

Playing was normal and uneventful. She did seem to separate herself some from the older siblings.

Kaitlyn plays up on Brayden’s level when he is around, and McKenna isn’t always interested in playing on Brayden’s level (totally understandable).

When Brayden is gone, Kaitlyn and McKenna play well together and find common ground, but McKenna isn’t always interested in Brayden’s interests. McKenna is more into “girly” things like dolls, the littlest pet shop, ponies, etc.

Something she is loving that Brayden is into is Legos. She loves to play with Legos, so when Brayden is playing with Legos she will be there with him.

Sleeping is going much better. We moved Kaitlyn in with Brayden so McKenna is free to sing herself to sleep all she wants. She is falling asleep earlier.

Naps are good, but I am once again needing to figure out what time her nap should start.

She used to start at 2 or 2:30. During room sharing, I had to move it to 1:30 because she was more tired. Now that she is getting better sleep at night, she needs it later again.

We are working between 2-2:30, but I don’t have the perfect time for her nap yet.

On a related note, she has been so much better this month with her behavior! She still tests things, but she seems to be more of a normal three year old testing things.

I am sure the lack of sleep was magnifying her desire to test, or at least the attitude while testing. She is much better now–much more obedient and less tenacious while testing.

McKenna LOVES the new baby. I mean, she LOVES the new baby.

I don’t think I can express in any way how much she loves this baby. I had some worry about her losing the “baby” of the family status. She enjoyed being the baby.

She does not seem to mind in the least. She LOVES her sister. She wants to hold her constantly, kisses her constantly, and says, “CUTE” every time she sees her.

McKenna did start sucking her thumb more when Brinley was born. I let it go for about 3 weeks, then I started to remind her that she doesn’t suck her thumb unless she is in bed.

I wanted her to be able to have that comfort item while she adjusted, but I don’t want it to become a hard habit.

We had a huge breakthrough this month. My husband took the kids swimming just for fun a couple of times and during those “fun only” pool visits, McKenna made great strides in swimming.

He took them to a different pool than we go to for lessons, and this one has a very shallow end that starts at one inch and gradually gets deeper as you move out. We think being able to play and feel safer helped. Our swimming lessons pool starts at 4 feet deep. She went from just floating to starting to actually swim.

  1. Thanks for writing! My son is 3y, 2 mo, so I have been following your daughter's routines for awhile. I appreciate the time it takes you to do this!

  2. Thank you for your time in doing this, as well! I have four kiddos of my own around the same ages. 5, 3, and two 22 month olds. We are finding that our 3 year old is exhausted during the day and could take a nap but then he is wired until 10 pm…when his normal bed time is 7:30. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  3. I was wondering what do you suggest I do if me 3yo doesn't want to nap, and wakes everyone else. At school and at home she's not quiet and keeps getting off her bed and out of her room. She has also started to get out of her room at night.Any suggestions would be so helpful, thank you supermom 😉
