45 week old baby and her sister playing

Aaahhh. Peace. I really hadn’t realized it, but McKenna was grumpy basically for all of January as her tooth broke through. I mentioned last week that she was moaning a lot. Well, this week it broke through and peace ensued.

NURSING

All is well. We are still nursing four times a day.

SOLIDS/FINGER FOODS

She continues to like everything she eats. She loves, loves, loves my homemade rolls. Loves.

ECZEMA

She started to get a bit of a rash again. She has it on spots where she rubs as she crawls. She was also getting it in other random places. We discovered our water softener was no longer working right. So we got that fixed, and her skin improved.

DROPPING THIRD NAP

We made big progress this week. She didn’t take the nap more days than she did. I think she is very close to having it dropped for good!

SIGNING

So, not four hours after I typed the words “…I need to put more effort into the signing” last week McKenna signed her first word!

I had only spent one meal focusing on it, and I focused on “more” and she signed “all done.” She was apparently just ready to do it on her own. She is an “all done” signing fool now 🙂 She signs it when done playing, eating, sleeping…It is exciting!

TEETHING

McKenna isn’t a terrible teether, but it impacts her negatively a lot more than it did Brayden or Kaitlyn. It was like a flip switched when that tooth broke through! She was so happy and content. She was sweet little McKenna again.

OUR SCHEDULE

8:15 AM–wake, nurse, solids (prunes or peaches/apricots and oatmeal). This is when we do a bath and independent playtime. We then do sibling playtime.
10:15 AM–nap.
12:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (green veggie and applesauce. Sometimes mix with blueberries or cherries). She then “helps” me put Brayden in rest time (which just means telling him to go) and Kaitlyn down for her nap. This is then free play with me in the same room.
2:10 PM–nap
4:30 PM–wake, nurse, solids (yellow veggie and bananas or pears). Then time with Daddy.
5:30ish PM–dinner with family. Finger foods and what we are having. Then time with family.
6:45 PM–nap. Some nights, she stays up until 7:00. Since most of this week included this nap, I am including it in our schedule.
7:45ish PM–wake, nurse, PJs, story, prayers, bed

On nights we dropped the third nap, we did:

7:15-7:30 PM–nurse, PJs, story, prayers, bed.

  1. Ok I love your blog and go to all the time for helpful hints. 🙂 Thank you sooo much for always posting! I do have a question. It is so hard to be home for both naps for the full two hours (I have an eight month old) I try to get my work outs in the morning running with the stroller but she falls asleep during the runs. When I get home should I just put her down normal and make her stay in there until 11. (Nap if home is 9-11 (wake up at 7 am) Or do I count the time in the stroller as nap?? Did that make any sense? 🙂

  2. That's cute, my daughter is an "all done" signing fool too! It was her first word to sign but it's a very helpful one and has made meal time much easier. What's your recipe for homemade rolls? I was just thinking last night that I'd like to make her something like that but I don't have any recipes.

  3. Can you do another schedule in tandem with your 3 kids as it stands now, and any others you have from these past few months since McKenna was born.

  4. Hi Plowmaster,What's your take on giving babies meat (chicken and beef)? Seems like baby food books now point to adopting a vegetarian sensibility but my daughter loves meat! I try to go the organic route as much as possible but wonder if I also need to head the vegetarian route as well. Would love to hear your thoughts on healthy eating. Thanks

  5. Hi,I love your Baby Summaries! My son, Jack, is just a few days older than McKenna so I enjoy reading your progress. This week Jack has begun to shake his head anytime we offer him food on a spoon. It doesn't matter what kind of food (favourite, pureed, whole, etc.) he shakes his head. Have you had any issues with refusing to eat with any of your kids, and if so, can you offer any suggestions on working through it? I have two older girls but never came across this with either of them. Thanks so much for your help.Shannon.

  6. Melissa, I would count the time in the stroller as a nap. But I would also do a few things if it were me:1-run when DH is home instead. I know for some people, running must happen in the morning or it won't happen at all. So if that is you, I would get up before he goes to work and get it in so she doesn't have that first nap interrupted. You could also run at night after she is in bed (I did that last summer).2-if you want to run during her first waketime, I would shorten the run. Or see if someone can watch her while you run. Or run during her nap if you have a neighbor you trust who you can leave the monitor with.Anyway, if you continue as is, I would count the stroller sleeping time as part of nap time.

  7. Daisy,Our pedi said we could do meat around 7ish months…but we just didn't. I didn't really sit down and think "no meat for them!" but I didn't give them meat. I give McKenna small amounts if we are have really, really tender meat. I think my head just thinks molars are necessary for meat so I won't give it until they have molars usually. Brayden and Kaitlyn still don't eat much meat because the don't like it. Brayden is starting to eat more slowly. They are both healthy and get protein from other sources. But I wanted McKenna to hopefully be more open to meat, so that is why I do give it to her if we are having tender meat.We aren't vegetarians and do eat meat. I think another difference for me with McKenna is now most of our meat comes from my grandfather who raises his own beef, where with the other two we just got it from the store. I feel better feeding meat to my baby knowing exactly what the cow ate 🙂

  8. Shannon, no, I never had that. Was he sick or something? Or is he just one who likes chunks of food better? If he is one who likes chunks better, I think I would give him chunks as much as possible and let him start to take control of his meals. He is old enough! Crazy!
