EAT AND SLEEP
Everything is good and normal here. I don’t know if I have talked about this recently, but Kaitlyn is someone who needs frequent snacks. She can very easily get “hangry.” She was this way as a toddler and preschooler, then in her child age range years that seemed to have gone away, but it started back up with preteen and teen years. She knows to carry a snack with her (though sometimes she forgets).
As she gets older, she has more and more interest in making food. She is a great cook and can follow written recipes, those really short reels on Instagram, and can also create things on her own. She enjoys making food (and we enjoy eating her food!). She also focuses on making food that tastes really good but is healthy and sustaining.
SCHOOL
This time period had some school year and some of summer. She had a good end to the school year. She is doing very well in school. She was excited to finish up her Junior year and she is looking forward to starting her Senior year.
We went to Florida during this time for our yearly family vacation. We chose to go during the school year to avoid crowds and avoid heat. Kaitlyn worked to get ahead before we left and was able to catch up on anything she missed while we were gone when she got back.
SUMMER
She has had a lot of fun so far this summer. She has attended a couple of different church camps. She has had lots of fun with friends. She also went on a trip with just friends. They went to the Tetons in Wyoming.
When she first approached me with wondering if she and her friends could go on a trip together, I asked if they would be willing to submit to an interview process–haha! That actually led to us having a parent meeting with all of the parents and kids. The kids made a presentation sharing their proposed trip plans. We all met at our house and in the end agreed to the trip. They had a lot of fun and were all safe!
WISDOM TEETH
One less-fun activity this summer for Kaitlyn was getting her wisdom teeth out. McKenna needed to get her wisdom teeth out and Kaitlyn could, so Kaitlyn just decided to do it.
Kaitlyn’s teeth were still impacted, so her surgery and recovery were harder than McKenna’s. She may have chosen to wait until they were growing in if she had the decision to make again. It wasn’t terrible, but definitely harder than McKenna’s.
In the end, the timing was good for her. She didn’t have anything she needed to get fully recovered for. All is well that ends well.
You can read more about her experience, as well as Brayden’s and McKenna’s, in my post on wisdom teeth removal.

EXTRACURRICULAR
During this time period, Kaitlyn finished up her club soccer season. She is hanging up her cleats and retiring from soccer. She ended up getting injured during her club season and she is still recovering from that, so it is good that she had already decided to retire. She is focusing on other things and has some exciting things in the works I can’t share about yet.
She also continued with piano lessons. She loves to play and is quite good at it. She has also taken up voice lessons since she no longer plays soccer.
She has a gym membership and goes to the gym often.
She did a local songwriting competition. She found out about it very last minute and signed up. She was one of two teenagers among a couple dozen adults. She did great! It was fun to attend the competition and listen to everyone.
TEENS AND FREEDOMS
I wanted to take a moment to just point out that a big challenge in parenting teenagers is knowing how many freedoms to give them. This just seems to be a challenge in parenting from the time your child starts to crawl.
Just like it was super important to allow enough but not too many freedoms with your toddler, you need to allow enough but not too many freedoms with your teens. That looks different for every teen. It isn’t even just different for every family. Every teen in every family needs to be allowed freedoms at the appropriate pace for them.
