Review of the book The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are by Kevin Leman. Is the book worth reading? What is it about?
I recently finished reading The Birth Order Book by Dr. Kevin Leman. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it.
Leman starts the book talking about birth order and the merits of it. He then talks about the effects of birth order on personality. He discusses factors that can change “norms” in birth order behaviors. These are variables that can make a third born behave as a first born, etc. This includes spacing, parenting styles of parents, blending families, and more. He points out that, “When talking about birth order, all general statements are indicators, not rules” (page 228).
Leman looks closely at each spot in birth order and likely personality traits that person will have. He looks at oldest, only, middle, and youngest. Leman spends two chapters devoted to perfectionism and how to apply that desire in a healthy way.
Leman also discusses how to be successful in business based on your birth order. He then discusses birth order and the marriage relationship. He goes on to discuss discipline with all birth orders and how to best parent each birth order.
I will be hitting many topics individually in posts. I enjoyed this book and have found certain elements to be true in my experience.

I like Dr. Kevin Leman too. I met him when helping him produce his video series “Value Packed Parenting.”Since then, I’ve supported his efforts to make parenting easier by devoting a blog to his video series. Watch a short clip from Making Children Mind without Losing Yours or “Making Marriage Work.”I think his latest book release “How to Have a New Kid by Friday” is good too.
