Hi, thanks for your blog! My 9 mo. boy (41 weeks) has been waking early...like 5-6am and he usually wakes at 6:45 and eats at 7am. This has been going on sporatically for the last 2 weeks..this is week 3 now. He is teething...4 on bottom and 3 on top..the 4th on top is coming through. Ouch..what a process. We have tried motrin at night tylenol day and hylands teething tablets...keeping it at bay, but his sleep is suffering:( He wakes up screaming at night. I see if he can soothe himself, but I have to go in and give a paci and sometimes I pick him up and pat him and put him down and he does fine. I have 4 yo right next door, so hard to let him CIO. I can see he is restless, tossing and turning about. Poor guy. I have a bad feeling this early wake time has become the new norm. I don't know if he will go back to the regular. His scheudle is 7am - 7 oz formula, oatmeal, stage 2fruit or yogurt, 8:30am - nap, 10:30am awake, 11am - 6 oz.formula, stage 2 green veggie, puffs, 12:30pm nap - 2:30pm awake, 3pm - 6 oz., stage 2 fruit, 5pm - nap, 5:45 awake, 6:30pm - 3 oz. formula, veggie, puffs, 7:30pm - 3oz. bed, asleep by 8pm. My second question is his schedule. I am always buying the 30 minutes before the bottle, but if I keep him awake longer, he still wakes up early from his nap. Also, how can re-arrane the afternoon schdule to make sense with bottles/food/bedtime? I think the third nap is on teh way out, but every other day like McKenna is probably the way it will work at first. Thanks! Jayci

My daughter is 7 months old. We have been following the feed, wake, sleep cycle since birth. We started a consistent bedtime and waketime at 2 months. She never napped well (always just 45 minutes), so at 5 months we had "nap bootcamp" and she takes all naps in her bed and is put down wide awake. She took to it quickly and after just one day was napping pretty well. She is still on a 3 hour schedule during the day and wakes one times to eat at night. Two things: 1. I'm quite confident she does not need to be eating in the night anymore, she definitely doesn't have weight gaining issues at 21 lbs, haha! and 2. I canNOT get her first nap going right. No matter what time I put her down for her first nap she will only sleep 45 minutes. I have tried "CIO" but she usually wakes up happy as a clam and will just play most of the time. I have tried putting her down earlier, later, and everywhere in between. The next two naps are "normal", but the first one seems to be throwing the whole day off and we end up in a vicious cycle of having to entertain for 30 minutes or so before the next feeding time. I am pretty sure she is ready for a four hour schedule because she doesn't seem very hungry and I'm having trouble getting her to eat, but I know I can't move her with the first nap issue. I don't think (but what do I know :) )it's a self-soothing issue becuase she can do it for all other naps. Any thoughts on this? She also still needs a fourth nap, but usually does not want to take it. I think if we get the first one taken care of we will be able to drop the fourth and possibly move to a four hour schedule (I am ok with staying at 3 if she needs to). As far as the middle of the night feeding, should I just let her CIO? She has been getting up one time, relatively close to the same time (usually between 3:30 and 5:30) every night since she was 2 1/2 months old so I pretty sure it is just a habit now. The strange thing is she has slept through 1-2 times a week for the past month or so, so that makes me think she is getting up for a reason. When it's close to 5:30, I have tried just rocking her back to sleep instead of feeding her and she either won't go to sleep or will take a very long time to get to sleep. If she does go back to sleep, it is never a deep enough sleep to lay her back down. We were never able to do a dreamfeed because it had the opposite effect :( Do you think her getting up at night could be messing with that first nap?

This morning she woke up from her nap after 45 minutes and started crying pretty quickly, so I have just left her and she has been crying for about 45 minutes and still has 30 minutes left before her next feeding.

I feel like I have read every post you have written on sleep, both daytime and nighttime and just don't know what to do. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

I should have added that when she wakes in the night (usually between 3:30 and 5:30) sshe will "talk" for 30 minutes to an hour and end up wide awake before she starts crying. If you suggest CIO, should we start the checks when she first wakes up or after she starts crying?

If you are ready to do CIO at night, it might be worth the try. But only do it if you are positive she isn't getting up for another reason.

One thing you could try in the night is to go in as soon as she wakes up and do your sleep routine again so she knows it is still sleep time (like if you have a special sleep song, sing that again).

You might try a four hour schedule. Keep her up for two hours, put her down for two, up two, down two, etc. With three naps a day. Sometimes moving to four hours fixes things. Good luck!

Hello,
I am so grateful for your blog. I reference it daily. I am in need of some advice. I have been implementing BW from the very beginning, and my daughter has slept through the night early on, taken great naps, and feeds well. She is 8 months old exactly and this past week has been rough. It has do with dropping her third nap. I tried doing this when she was about 6 1/2 months, but she was not ready. Lately, she has been taking super short naps and waking up early in the morning, so I believe it is time to drop it. However, I am having a hard time finding out how to do so since her naps are so short now. DWT is 7:30. She has been waking at 6:30 or so. I will keep her up for 1 1/2 hours and then put her down for a nap, but she'll only sleep for 45 minutes. She wakes up happy. I can't let her CIO because she just talks to herself forever. Also, because she was taking the 3 naps, I have continued with 5 feedings. Any suggestions on how to combat this problem? Thank you so much!

Kim, be sure to see the post on 5-8 month sleep disruptions for some ideas on why she might be waking both in the morning and from naps.

I would just drop the nap "cold turkey." You might find it easier if you leave the house or keep her busy during that time. You might also need an earlier bedtime for a while. Move to four hour feedings (so 7:30, 11:30, 3:30, then 6:30 or 7:00).

Hi! Thanks for your blog! I'm trying to figure out why all of a sudden for the last month my son (8 months) has been waking up in the morning at 6 instead of 7am. He still takes 3 naps a day and bed is at 7pm. We typically leave him in his crib until 7 but some mornings he cries. We've gone in to rock him a few times and he may sleep an extra 20 minutes on us but we don't want that to be a habit. He isn't waking early for hunger since we've ruled that out too. Any thoughts.. Thanks!
