Babywise Baby Seven Month Overview
During the eighth month, while your baby is 7 months old moving to 8 months old, you can watch for and expect the following milestones.
7 Month Old “Eat”
This month is pretty low-key about any changes. The biggest milestone to watch for is to start finger foods if you haven’t already.
That means you still have 4-5 liquid feedings and up to 3 solid feedings. Those solid feedings should happen WITH the liquid feedings.
7 Month Old “Wake” or Playtime
- Your baby’s wake window should be 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes between naps. Some will need less and some will need more; always follow your individual baby’s needs.
- Independent play will be 30-45 minutes.
- You can start to teach sign language to your baby if you haven’t already. This can be done at any point forward.
- Get great toy ideas in this post Best Toys for Baby: Ages 7-9 Months Old.
- You might start to see that your little one needs some boundaries set. Do not be afraid to set boundaries with a 7 month old baby. Read this post on setting boundaries with babies for more on that.

7 Month Old “Sleep”
- Baby will have 2-3 naps a day. If your baby has three naps a day, be on the lookout for signs baby is ready to drop that third nap and be at two naps. It might not happen this month, but 8 months old is the average age, so you are coming up on it.
- Naps will be 1.5-2.5 hours each. The third nap (if you have it) could be short and just be 30-60 minutes long.
- Baby should sleep 10-12 hours at night.
- A big milestone your baby might reach this month is being ready to drop the dreamfeed if she still has one. I have a post to help you know When to Stop the Dreamfeed here.
- There is also a big sleep regression in this age range. It is not uncommon for babies in the 5-8 month old range to start to have sleep issues for various reasons. If your 5 month old starts to have sleep troubles, be sure to read 11 Reasons Your 5-8 Month Old Stopped Sleeping Well.
7 Month Old “Schedule”
If your baby is on a three hour schedule, watch for signs your baby is ready to move to a 4 Hour Schedule. You can read all about the four hour schedule here.

Hi I haven’t done baby wise. My child is almost 8 months old and we’ve been fighting her wanting to be on a 5 am to 5 pm schedule since the 4 month sleep regression.. before that she slept great. Everything else I have read says to extend wake times throughout the day.. will most babies this age sleep with only a couple hours of wake time especially between the last nap and bedtime
Hello, a baby this age needs 4 feedings in a 24 hour period (some will need 5). If you are awake for 12 hours a day and eating 4 times a day, then you are on a 4 hour feeding schedule.
If you take a 2 hour nap, then wake time length will be 2 hours.
Some babies at 8 months have 2 naps and some have 3 naps, so how long your last wake time length will be will vary depending on if you have that last nap or not.
Hi there, sorry I’m not totally understanding based on some of your schedules. If they take that last nap (3rd nap). Are you waking them, feeding them and then directly putting them back down for sleep again? I want a 7:00-7:00 schedule. Assuming the 3rd nap starts at 5:00Pm… but I want her in bed for 7:00pm do you wake her at 6:00 and she only has 1 hour wake time before bed? Or just give a half hour nap? I see in your overview you have (6:00pm get up (some might take 2 hour nap)). Doesn’t that mean that they are basically getting up from the 3rd nap and directly feeding/getting ready for bed? Sorry for the confusion!
Yes it could mean they get up, eat, get ready for bed, and go back down for a nap.
But with a 7-7 schedule, make sure your baby can go more than 12 hours between feedings. Many times, a 7-7 means eat first meal at 7 and eats last meal at 7, which will put bedtime later than 7. Some babies can go more than 12 hours between feeding, but it is good to be aware and mindful.
