Babywise Baby Twelfth Month Overview
As your baby moves through this month and toward being a 12 month old, here are some things to expect.
EAT
If you are still breastfeeding, you might be thinking about weaning from that coming up. Some people start to wean with an 11 month old so that you are done at 12 months old, while others wait to start weaning at 12 months old or older. There is no right or wrong general timeline–just best for your family.
If you are bottle feeding, you might be thinking about weaning from a bottle and moving toward a sippy cup and/or weaning from formula.
No matter what you might be weaning from, see my post How To Wean Baby from Breast, Bottle, and Formula for all the tips.
You still want 3-4 liquid feedings in a day and 3 solid feedings in a day with an optional snack.
If baby is not eating meals with the family, this is a good time to start thinking about that. Read through this post for full info and tips.
Wake
Your wake time tips stay the same as they have been for a while. Have independent playtime each day. Learning time is great to have–it can be super, super simple.
Independent playtime can be up to 60 minutes once a day, or you can still do shorter times twice a day.

Sleep
Stick to two naps, even if you think your baby needs one nap. Your baby still needs two naps. If you really think your baby is ready for one nap, read my post on the nap transition time first.
11 Month Old Schedule Basics
Babies in the 9-12 month old age range have:
- 3-4 liquid feedings
- 3 solid feedings
- A snack if needed/desired (snack can be a great time to practice finger food eating)
- 2 naps per day
- 10-12 hours of sleep at night
- Independent Playtime for up to 60 minutes, typically once a day
- Need for discipline throughout the day

So your 11 month old (McKenna) according to the first suggested schedule…she naps 4 hours during the day and still sleeps about 12.5 at night? Girl that’s amazing. I’m here trying to figure out my 11 month old. She naps 1.5 – 2 hours for at least one nap and then the second is about an hour or potentially 1.5 so it’s about a total of 3 in a day. But she wakes up so early. Like 5:30/6am. I’d love to get her to like 6:30/7! Any advice? Maybe more daytime sleep? Try 3.5-4 and push bedtime back? Thanks so much
McKenna has always loved to sleep–and still does! She just gets pure joy from sleep. Not all people are high sleep needs. And if you look long term, if your girl is not high sleep needs, she will have an easier time being a mom, so there is a perk ;).
But you can definitely work on that morning wake up time. Check out this post: https://www.babywisemom.com/how-to-get-your-child-to-sleep-in-later/
